Country music star Toby Keith recently passed away at the age of 62. Keith rose to stardom in the 90s with hits like Should’ve Been a Cowboy and for decades remained a relevant figure in music. The reason behind his demise is said to be stomach cancer which he was suffering from for a while.
Recently, NBA veteran Charles Barkley paid his tribute to the late legend on an episode of The Steam Room with Ernie Johnson. Barkley recalled the times he spent with Keith and who he was as a person.
Barkley said that pitcher Roger Clemens introduced him to Keith and took them out for the first time. He said, “Roger took me out with Toby Keith one night in Vegas probably 20-some years ago. I was a big fan and he was such an awesome man.” Barkley extended his condolences to Keith’s family and loved ones and said that he remembers him for the man he was. Sir Charles also gave a shoutout to the iconic red solo cup, a trend that Keith originated. He actually had a song titled Red Solo Cup and from there it gained cultural significance. He said, “I wanna just thank Toby and his family. They’re in my thoughts and prayers.”

Sir Charles still remembers the time when he was with Toby in Vegas and the reason for that is that despite being a celebrity and a star, he was just a genuine person. This quality of Keith won Barkley over and since then he has had only good things to say about him. “I’m using the red solo cup for you Toby. Rest in peace my brother,” Barkley added.

Clemens was the reason why Barkley got to know Keith so closely. Clemens himself shared a special bond with the late legend and after he passed away, the baseball legend took to X to express his feelings for his late friend while remembering the times they were able to share with one another. Clemens wrote, “This video is from last week in Florida… not sure why I took the mic and felt the urge to sing a Toby song but I know now.”

There’s no one on this earth that loved his country more. (NO ONE!) A great talent, and gentle giant that took no sh*t from anybody”, he added. Clemens said that among many other things, he will miss talking baseball with his friend late at night.
