One comment was all it took for the majority of the NBA circles to question what was in Shaquille O’Neal’s head. Is he excited about Wemby or not? Does he want Bol Bol in the spotlight? One second he’s dismissive of Victor Wembanyama, the next he’s subtly hyping him for tying his rookie record. He even made the Inside Guys explode on him. He’s not finding much support all around either except from one person crawling out of the woodwork. Michael Jordan once took a gamble on him. And he’s now taking a gamble on Shaq’s beliefs.

Michael Jordan’s Washington Wizards tenure started with a controversial decision to pick Kwame Brown in the NBA draft. Controversial selections seem to be his brand now.

Now a YouTuber on his channel, Kwame Brown Bust Life, he has reactions to happenings in the NBA world. And he was not going to miss his opportunity to react to Shaquille O’Neal’s commentary.

While Victor Wembanyama was proving to be a powerhouse for the Spurs, Shaq decided to say it was nothing. He claimed there’s another big man in the league right now who deserves as much attention for his skills and that’s Bol Bol. Charles Barkley and fans couldn’t agree with him. But Kwame Brown did.

Shaq done lost his damn mind,” the former Los Angeles Lakers center said regarding the general opinion about O’Neal right now. But he doesn’t think so. He believes Shaq does have a point. According to Brown, Bol Bol and Wemby do have a similar skill set. But Bol Bol has not had the chance to develop it or showcase his talent because he’s always on a roster with standouts. Brown compared it to how Jermaine O’Neal would not be played over Rasheed Wallace.

Before Bol Bol was with the Phoenix Suns (that were obliterated by Wemby), the 23-year-old played with the Denver Nuggets and the Orlando Magic before. In Orlando at least, he didn’t get enough playtime when the 2022-23 Rookie of the Year, Paolo Banchero, was on the court. And when he’s on the same team as Nikola Jokic, very unlikely he would be pushed forward.

Brown’s viewers do agree with him that Bol Bol hasn’t had the opportunity to show his skill set. Victor Wembanyama, however, blows him away. But while Brown did get some agreement, Shaq didn’t.

Shaq’s controversial take stirred trouble

While on Inside the NBA, Shaq said that Bol Bol was set for great things before Wemby. He just didn’t play hard enough while Wemby has proven consistency. That was, however, lost in translation. As per most analysts and fans, they’re hardly comparable.

Meanwhile, Wemby has apparently taken Shaq’s words to heart. Determined to prove O’Neal’s criticism wrong, he matched Big Diesel’s rookie record with 100 points and 10 blocks in his first five games.

Fans have a hard time agreeing with Shaq’s take. But somehow, after Brown put it in perspective, his YouTube commenters see Shaq’s side.

One take at a time

I was 7 when I saw 'Space Jam' but didn't know till the third rewatch the lead actor is actually a living basketball legend. It was while studying journalism that my friend would go on about the Warriors from Golden State. Keen on athletes' personas outside their arenas, it was Stephen Curry's confidence and philanthropy that drew me to follow the news on NBA pros and explore sports media.
