Shaquille O’Neal is the first player in the history of Orlando to have their number retired. However, when it came time for him to speak on the night, he humbly said he should’ve been the second player. The honor, Shaq believed, should’ve gone to another Orlando Magic legend who was present on the night.  The Big Aristotle expressed that No.25 should’ve been up in the rafters before him.

It’s a real honor to be the first Orlando Magic player to get their jersey retired, although I would have expected to be number 2,” O’Neal said after inviting Nick Anderson first to the podium. He called him “the first superstar” of the Orlando Magic.

Anderson is undoubtedly a fan favorite of Orlando. When Magic was established in 1989 he was the first ever player to be selected by this brand new team. He led the team in PPG during the 1991-92 season, just before Shaq came in the picture.

You were the first superstar here in Orlando. I appreciate you for sacrificing for me. You could have {taken} the shot every time, but you threw it in [to low post].” Shaq may have been referring to when Anderson reduced his offensive role to let Shaq carry the team.

O’Neal has his lofty moments. But he’s also known for genuinely humbling himself when it comes to many legends who inspired. This gesture was very well-received.

Shaquille O’Neal makes a compelling plea

The crowd at Kia Center acknowledged Shaq’s gesture with roaring applause. Anderson was visibly moved as Shaq said, “I definitely want to come back here when your jersey gets retired.”

The combination of Shaq and Penny Hardaway led the young franchise to playoffs and finals. But the contributions of Anderson, who had the ability to adapt in any position, was undeniable. He’s unfortunately remembered for missing four consecutive free throws in Game 1 of the 1995 NBA Finals though Shaq’s free throw rate is far worse than that.
