You can’t celebrate Dwyane Wade without an O’Neal in the house. Repping her dad at Kaseya Center was Taahirah O’Neal. The eldest of Shaquille O’Neal‘s kids, and D-Wade’s honorary niece, has ended her retirement from sports viewing to witness one of the biggest nights of her ‘unc’s career. She was in the stands with thousands of fans during the matchup between the Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets to celebrate The Flash.

Not only do Shaq and Wade have the funniest brotherly friendship, the O’Neal kids are pretty close to the Wades too. Taahirah showed that through a series of Instagram Stories, including marking her attendance at the arena with commemorative Hall of Fame night displays for Wade. “Celebrating Unc today and everyday,” she wrote.

Taahirah O’Neal has especially been present at her Unc’s Miami events and she wasn’t going to miss out on this one. The 27-year-old filmed his heartfelt speech too with a good view of the spotlight on Wade’s retired No.3 in the rafters in the same line with Shaq’s No.32. She also stayed for the game and got a good snap of a portrait of the younger Shaq in Heat uniform.

Heat president and Shaq’s former taskmaster, Pat Riley announced that a statue of D-Wade will be installed on Biscayne Boulevard outside Kaseya Center. When the bronze version of The Flash will be unveiled this fall, Wade would be the first Miami Heat star to earn this honor. One of the factors that led to it is the first championship he won alongside then-3x NBA champion, Shaquille O’Neal.

Shaq’s humor clearly rubbed off on his former coach as Pat Riley joked, the statue is “Bigger than Shaquille O’Neal.” The 8-foot bronze likeness of Wade won’t exactly dwarf 7’1″ Big Diesel but you get the gist. O’Neal wasn’t present at the event as his TNT job keeps him in Atlanta most days. He, however, shared Riley’s speech and demonstration with the Wade bobblehead on his Instagram Stories. It proved he’s not only glad for Wade but also approved the Heat president’s little quip. He should also gift Taahirah a little something nice for being there for his former teammate.

D-Wade restores Taahirah’s love for the game

Despite her basketball superstar dad and honorary uncles within the NBA, Taahirah is not inclined to sports like her younger siblings. She recently made it known she’s never “voluntarily” stepped into the Toyota Center though she’s a Houston resident,

She’s got Shaq’s business savvy and is the most involved in his multi-faceted empire. But after watching the Houston Rockets New Year game, she declared, “This is the last NBA game I will ever attend. I am officially retiring.”

Like Michael Jordan in his prime, Taahirah made a grand comeback to basketball (viewing) 14 days into the year. All for Dwyane Wade. We know who the O’Neal kids favorite ‘unc’ is then.

One take at a time

I was 7 when I saw 'Space Jam' but didn't know till the third rewatch the lead actor is actually a living basketball legend. It was while studying journalism that my friend would go on about the Warriors from Golden State. Keen on athletes' personas outside their arenas, it was Stephen Curry's confidence and philanthropy that drew me to follow the news on NBA pros and explore sports media.
