The Jennifer Hudson Show featured the namesake’s one-time colleague, Joel McHale, this week. The last time it was Shaquille O’Neal who brought them together. As the larger-than-life NBA legend is prone to do, he brings together the best stars for a good cause annually at The Event. The 2024 edition of his fundraiser for The Shaquille O’Neal Foundation featured unmatched superstardom in Jennifer Hudson and John Legend and was hosted by Joel McHale.
McHale probably hasn’t watched American Idol or expanded his taste in music because he had a startling realization at The Event in October 2023. It was overwhelming enough that as soon as he sat across J-Hud, he told the live studio audience, “I don’t know if you know this but Jennifer can sing.” Because that EGOT collection is not a dead giveaway.
But McHale’s comedy is why he’s one of Shaq’s favorite funnymen and he’s only kidding. Which he emphasized immediately after. “I’m always sarcastic but you brought the house down… It was just amazing.” He even suggested she should try out for that show hosted by Ryan Seacrest, called American Idol. He even thinks she could win an Oscar or a Grammy if she keeps it up. The fabulous Miss Hudson very graciously accepted the suggestions. And she didn’t even point out she’s been there, done that.

Jokes aside, McHale is a genuine fan who knows Hudson’s career from top to bottom. He even admitted he used to vote for her on American Idol. He was undeniably ecstatic to share the stage with her, thanks to Shaq. Who, by the way, couldn’t escape McHale’s sarcasm even in his absence.

Shaq’s friends have a ball at The Event
The Event in Las Vegas supports Shaq’s philanthropic work with The Boys and Girls Club. The immediate show since then, Hudson had all the scoop about the gala. She was endeared by the big man splurging $20,000 for his mother, Lucille, to have a seat on the stage so she could watch Hudson and Legend perform up close.

McHale too had the time of his life. Though he phrased it funnily. “There’s a basketball player named Shaquille O’Neal and he’s done very well.” Don’t go by his nonchalant tone. The comedian also alleges he’s the same height as the 7’1″ center.

More of his natural knack for hilarity is featured in his sitcom, Animal Control. Shaq’s probably watching.
