What exactly is Manu Ginobili’s role in the current San Antonio Spurs team, you wonder? Ginobili states in the podcast episode, “Pop asks me that every day. I’m just there. I try to contribute in any way possible. I do a little bit of everything but not too much of anything.”

The 4x NBA champion then goes on to praise the 7’4 Spurs rookie. He says this about Wembanyama, “There’s never been anybody like him, but what I always say is he’s still a kid”.

Ginobili further explains his expectation from Wembanyama, “You gotta be patient. He’s going to be extraordinary, but there’s work to be done. There’s a process. Expecting him to take us to the playoffs or Finals right away doesn’t make any sense.” Despite the Spurs’ current losing streak (6th in a row), Manu Ginobili still expects great things from the new Spurs squad and the 7’4 Spurs Rookie.

Victor Wembanyama shone in his official debut game in the NBA. Despite losing to the Dallas Mavericks 126-119, the 7’4 Spurs forward/center scored a whopping 15 points in just 23 minutes of game time. Due to foul trouble early on in the game, the Spurs rookie’s playing minutes were heavily restricted. His first regular season game against the Mavericks was the most-watched opening night game in more than a decade.

This insane viewership is probably because of his pre-season game performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder on October 9th, 2023. Despite losing to OKC in an enthralling 122-121 finish, the Spurs rookie proved to everyone that he’s the ‘real deal’ in that game. Victor Wembanyama ended up scoring 20 points and getting 5 rebounds in the preseason game against the OKC.

However, after the San Antonio Spurs’ poor performance in the ‘In-Season’ NBA tournament so far, the NBA team needs to definitely improve aspects of their game. In order to compete on an elite level with the other NBA teams, Coach Popovich needs to come up with something airtight for sure.
