Can you imagine Stephen Curry in a different jersey? Well, we can’t either! Since June 25, 2009—his father’s birthday—Curry has been a staple for the Golden State Warriors. Picked seventh overall in the NBA draft, the 36-year-old recently signed a one-year, $63 million extension with the franchise. But that hasn’t dampened whispers on whether he’d consider leaving the team. 

But perhaps he should stay for his own good. Or at least that’s the folks at Gils Arena Podcast think. WNBA champ Lexie Brown stated, “I want him to retire a Golden State Warrior. I think no (on Curry playing for his hometown Charlotte Hornets). I think it’s good for his legacy,” Brown stated on the podcast, before adding, “I think it’s going to cement his legacy as I mean, he’s already one of the greatest, but if he’s able to start and finish a career in one team like that means something.” But symbolism aside, do the Warriors have what it takes to retain their veteran?

Their recent run has definitely creased some eyebrows. Especially given how Steph has vehemently stated his reservations about being associated with a “bottom feeder”. The 2023-2024 season was the third time in five years that the Dubs missed the playoffs. Plagued by Draymond Green’s suspension, Curry and Klay Thompson’s dipping form, and the latter’s free agency soon approaching, they suffered a 118-94 defeat from the Sacramento Kings. 

Now without Thompson, who was whisked away by the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50 million contract, the Golden State Warriors don’t look nearly as ready for the next season according to many. But that doesn’t mean the #30 is open to changing his allegiance just yet. Or is he? Well, you be the judge.

In an interview last month, the point guard stated, ” I’ve always said I want to be a Warrior for life. At this stage in my career, I feel like that’s possible”.

But he also continued, “I’m taking it one step at a time, to be honest. I think that’s the only way that will protect my happiness…I’ll continue to make the decisions that are best for me and for my career at the end of the day when it comes to just the imagination. I want to win. Let’s put it this way, it’s a longwinded way of saying that it if it is a situation where you’re a bottom feeder and it’s just because you want to stay there, I’d have a hard time with that. But I don’t think that’s going to be the reality.”

But if Curry decides to end his decorated career with the Golden State Warriors, it’ll be a move reminiscent of Kobe Bryant. The veteran spent his entire career with the Los Angeles Lakers up until his passing, leaving a legacy only few can touch.

Bryant helped the team win five championship titles. Similarly, the 2x MVP winner has had a legendary run with the Warriors, boasting four NBA titles. Another win with the team would further solidify his place as one of the NBA’s all-time greats.

Arenas asked the squad whether a championship win by Curry would be meaningful if it wasn’t with the Warriors. Most of the guests, including Dwight Howard, agreed that such a win would be valid while Nick Young expressed his wish to see James and Curry team up.

For now, Curry continues to break new ground, securing some of the most enticing deals in the league’s history.

Stephen Curry is the first NBA player to earn more than $60 million in one season

Curry is 36 now, but there’s no doubt that he still plays like he’s in his prime. Without his thunderous performances and clutch plays, Team USA wouldn’t have been able to clinch its fifth consecutive gold medal in Paris. He was crucial in all the games, especially in the Final against France, where he hit four 3-pointers in a row to seal the game.

He was simply spectacular. He has now signed a one-year extension worth $63 million that will see him in the Warriors threads at least till the 2026-27 season, making him the first NBA player to secure such an impressive deal over $60 million.

Previously, he signed a four-year deal worth $215 million with the Golden State Warriors. With this latest extension, he will earn a total of $178 million, bringing his NBA earnings to $532.7 million. After the Los Angeles Lakers veteran James and 2x champ Kevin Durant, the 10x NBA All-Star will become the third NBA player to surpass $500 million in career earnings. The question now is whether the Warriors will be able to secure another championship.
