From lack of ACs to card-boards, athletes’ struggles at the Paris Olympics seem to be never-ending. There have already been multiple instances of criticism of the arrangements. Meanwhile, a recent video that surfaced on the internet seems to have added insult to injury to the Paris Olympic Management Committee. Taking a firm stand on the scenario, in the most recent instance, has been former NBA star Kevin Garnett.
Team Liberia’s Ebony Morrison shared a video highlighting her struggle, living without AC amid the ongoing Heat Wave in France. To make things worse, the players are also facing infestation from bugs because of the absence of window screens. Brut America re-shared Morrison’s video, where she was seen trying to kill the bugs using a towel. Re-sharing the video to his IG story, Kevin Garnett wrote, “Tf going on in Paris Olympics? Nahh … that’s not it… nah .. I’ll coo on that.. DO BETTER OLYMPICS.”

All of this comes amid Paris’ initiative to cut down on the Olympics budget. Apart from this, yet another focus in this Olympics has been to reduce the carbon footprint. Ensuring the same Paris Olympics infrastructure in-charge, Yann Krysinksi, had earlier announced that athletes will not be provided with air conditioning units. “We don’t need air conditioning in these buildings because we oriented the facades so that they wouldn’t get too much sun during the summer. And the facades, the insulation is really efficient,” he told Reuters.
But it seems he did not consider the reports that suggested this could be the hottest games in history. And that Paris will witness a nearly 5.5 degrees’ rise in temperature than the last time the city hosted the games. In fact, as per an article by CBC, the heat wave passing through eastern Europe and northern Africa has already resulted in at least 21 people’s demise. No wonder that the USA Olympics Committee took pre-emptive measures to safeguard their athletes.
The US Olympics committee has provided their athletes with ACs on their own
Acting on the warnings of increased temperatures in Paris, US Olympic and Paralympic Committee CEO Sarah Hirshland had announced that the management will supply their athletes with air conditioning units. “In our conversations with athletes, this was a very high priority. And something that the athletes felt was a critical component in their performance capability…” she said.
The fact Dwyane Wade suffered a sleepless night, as stated by him in an IG story, because of a faulty AC reflects the issue athletes could be facing. Notably, Wade is NBC’s commentator for men’s basketball games at the Olympics. The 3x NBA champ himself had to go out shopping the very next day to bring the situation under control. “… I needed a fan for my room,” he wrote in one of his IG stories while shopping.

Even some other countries like India have provided their athletes with AC units amid the intense heat wave. The move came after discussions with the Indian Olympic Association and the French Embassy. Now, it’s to be seen if the Paris Olympics’ Management Committee itself takes some steps to counter the issues recently highlighted by Brut, and backed by Kevin Garnett.
