The Super Bowl is not just a game, but a cultural spectacle that attracts millions of fans. The Halftime show, which many people look forward to, had earlier involved appearances from Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Beyoncé. After the NFL has chosen Kendrick Lamar as the headliner of the upcoming 2025 Super Bowl, the expectation for the show is higher than ever. However, not everyone is happy with this decision, including the NBA veteran, Carmelo Anthony

In the recent episode of “7pm in Brooklyn” in which Issa Rae was a guest, Kid Mero pointed out the fact that the producers of the NFL have chosen Kendrick Lamar to perform because he has many hits under his name. “But with Wayne, how can you sit there and say he don’t have enough hits like this?…That’s crazy. Nah, Wayne should have that show. It should have been Wayne’s show, said Anthony during that segment.

Anthony wanted to highlight the point that NFL producers are sleeping on Lil Wayne just because he doesn’t have many hits is a very absurd reason. The rapper has been nominated for the Grammy’s 24 times and has won the award 5 times. Along with this, he also has three Billboard Music Awards under his belt. But the question arises as to why only Lil Wayne is being talked about.

The 2025 Super Bowl game is scheduled to take place on February 9, 2025, at Caesar’s Super Dome in New Orleans, which is the native place of the 41-year-old rapper. Not getting to perform in one’s hometown is a serious letdown, and Wayne has also spoken about it publicly. “Talking about it hurt a whole lot. I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown and for just automatically, mentally putting myself in that position,” said the rapper in a video he posted on Instagram.

The only reason that can be speculated for the producers for not selecting Wayne is that he does not have many current hits, whereas Lamar is still beaming on the music charts. Moreover, his recent feud with Drake has taken his popularity to a whole new level. Ultimately, the decision of who performs at the Super Bowl halftime show is a subjective one. However, Anthony’s comments highlight the importance of considering the tastes of the broader audience when making such a high-profile decision. But, not every player is on the side of Anthony.

A former Atlanta Hawks player has a different opinion

While Carmelo Anthony was hoping to see Lil Wayne take the gridiron for a spectacular performance, former Atlanta Hawks player Jeff Teague has a completely different stance. According to him, Wayne would not have been a good fit for the show.

The reason given by the NBA champ was that Lil Wayne would have done his performance on the songs that most people didn’t hear or like. However, on the other hand, Lamar is the current hot star in the rapping scene, with his songs having millions of plays. “A lot of people don’t listen to Kendrick,” said Teague during the ‘Club 520‘ podcast.

However, despite comments like this from Teague, many other NBA entities like Kenyon Martin and Trae Young showed their support towards the New Orleans native rapper. Only time will tell if Lil Wayne ever will be headlining the Super Bowl event.
