Transitioning from high school to college is not the easiest. In the case of athletes, the jump is much more difficult. Finding the right college to commit to can be a serious challenge as it involves a lot of variables. And notably, those variables can affect the draft stock of a young prospect. This includes the academics, coaching philosophy, style of play, and facilities to name a few. Money also plays a huge role in the decision, after collegiate athletes became eligible to earn a certain sum through endorsements.

Top talents are never short of options and recruiters can face stiff competition from other universities for their signature. Players often de-commit to universities after a better proposal arises. Shaquille O’Neal recently shared a similar story, where a recruit chose to represent a certain college after first committing elsewhere.
