Hilarious, exceptional, or peculiar, if you are any of those things, you have got Gilbert Arenas‘ attention. The most recent one has been Seattle Storm’s Skylar Diggins-Smith. The 33-year-old was involved in a friendly banter with LA Sparks’ Kia Nurse during their recent matchup. Notably, Nurse was mic’d up for the preseason game between the two teams. And the conversation caught between Nurse and Smith on the microphone has left former Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas into splits.
The former NBA star even shared the clip on his Instagram story. “@wnba is this what weve been missing… All players must be mic’d moving forward… #WNBA is starting off 2024 on 000 @skylardigginssmith early MVP candidate,” read the caption. The story featured Kia Nurse telling Skylar Diggins-Smith how she is older now, almost 30. “But my P*ss is old… older,” Smith replied. Even Nurse was left laughing at her statement while stating she was wearing a mic.

And thus, came Gilbert Arenas’ hilarious demand of making all players wear a microphone, along with an appreciation for Smith as he declared her to be an MVP candidate. This comes as a great compliment for Smith, as she had missed her last season because of her pregnancy. This is her comeback season with her new franchise, Seattle Storm. However, Gilbert Arenas’ claim puts the Sparks’ guard in direct contention with A’ja Wilson as she too is said to be an MVP contender for 2024 season.
A quick comparison between A’ja Wilson and Skylar Diggins-Smith
Wilson has got an edge over Smith in terms of career stats so far. Wilson has averaged 19.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game so far in her 6-season career. On the other hand, Smith has averaged 16.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 5.0 assists so far in her 9-season career.

Apart from this, in terms of awards and accolades as well, Wilson is miles ahead of the Storm’s 33-year-old guard. Despite having a shorter career duration, Wilson has 2 WNBA championships, a 2023 WNBA Finals MVP title, and 2 WNBA MVP titles to her name. She also earned herself the Defensive Player of the Year award two times in a row—2022 and 2023.

As compared to Wilson, the only notable accolade Smith has to boast is her 6x All-Star appearances. Moreover, she has only played one game in the 2024 preseason, scoring 14 points. And Wilson is yet to play her first game of this WNBA preseason. So, the claim by Gilbert Arenas seems to be nothing but an overestimation when compared to A’ja Wilson’s chances at the MVP title.
