Iman Shumpert isn’t just an ex-NBA champ. He’s a cultural icon who brought style, intensity, and unapologetic originality to everything he did. Picked 17th by the New York Knicks in the 2011 NBA Draft, he quickly stood out as one of the league’s best lockdown defenders. He even went on to become a crucial piece in the Cavaliers’ 2016 title win. Locking down opponents while playing alongside superstars like LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Love.
But what made Shumpert special wasn’t just his skills. It was his larger-than-life persona. Whether rocking a high-top fade hairstyle, diving into music, or making bold fashion statements. He has always done things his way. Outside of basketball, he has tried his hand at rapping, reality TV, and even won Dancing With the Stars. There he made history as the first NBA player to take home the Mirrorball trophy.
Through his rapping, he released a full-length project titled Substance Abuse, that earned him respect beyond the “athlete rapper” tag he got. He has also been vocal about other serious topics. Like calling out police brutality, opening up about mental health, and discussing the weight of fame with honesty. This kind of a personality can only be developed from a very young age, with proper nurturing as a child. His family deserves credit for most of what Iman Shumpert is today.

Iman Shumpert’s birth family
Iman Asante Shumpert was born on June 26, 1990, in Berwyn, Illinois to Odis and La’Tanya Shumpert. He grew up in Oak Park which was a nearby suburb. Raised with three brothers, he came from a tight-knit family that valued discipline, creativity, and teamwork. His love for basketball started early, playing pickup games with his siblings in their backyard. They had a competitive environment that shaped his future career.
Odis Shumpert, Iman’s dad, is an insurance broker who owns the Odis Insurance Agency. When he’s not working, he enjoys cooking and has even appeared in food segments with Iman, highlighting their close relationship. As a father, Odis always taught his kids the value of hard work and persistence in everything they did. Their dynamic reflected really well on a podcast on Uninterrupted. One line that stuck with us was when Iman asked “Pop when you hear the word family values, what comes to your mind?”. Without even thinking for a moment, Odis responded “Honesty. Joy. Happiness. Childhood. And many more words beyond expressing.”
That answer revealed everything about their family. Odis is a loving father who knows how to balance discipline with gentleness. Whereas, La’Tanya Shumpert is an adjunct professor of art and design at Columbia College Chicago. She put her career on hold at times to support her sons, making sure they had every opportunity to thrive. Her artistic influence brought creativity into their home. She inspired Iman to pursue passions outside of sports. She was a constant presence at their games and events, always encouraging them to chase their dreams.
The siblings and their dynamic
Iman Shumpert grew up in a household full of sibling rivalry, and brotherly loyalty. He is the second youngest of four brothers. Odis III, Ahrii, Iman, and Kasani. They were closely knitted and even shared a room till a good age. We got to know about this in a funny anecdote that Iman shared. He said “In high school, I had this girl I was dating. She come over to the crib, we vibing, whatever. I had to explain to her how I share the room with my brothers.”

At the time it was an embarrassing situation for him but looking back, he surely feels grateful to have spent so much time closely with his siblings. He even continued to share “Then it rained and it rained and went through the roof right. But when it start coming through the roof, me and my brothers grabbed the pots.” What seemed normal to him was foreign, and a little embarrassing, in front of his guest. He remembers “We kind of like knew the spot cuz we knew we needed to replace the roof or whatever. I remember seeing her face look like ‘How you know to go right there with the pot like what.'”
This is such an innocent and funny incident, that only siblings can experience together. Stories like these hit home and make the stars a bit more relatable to us as fans. But growing up under one roof with his brothers wasn’t just wholesome, it was also competitive that shaped him into the athlete that he was. He shared “I was so short and I was real skinny, and my older brothers, [Odis and Ahrii], would just beat up on me,” Iman recalled. “Back home, if you get scored on, you’re the weak link.”

That tough-love philosophy shaped him on the rough courts of Oak Park, Illinois, a suburb just west of Chicago. It was in those backyard battles that Iman developed his lockdown defensive mentality. “When I started getting good, they were like, ‘If you’re going to play on our team when we go play pick-up and you start getting scored on, we’re not going to let you play anymore.’”
Among the four brothers, Ahrii Shumpert stands out as Iman’s most visible partner. He is a former podcast host and has been Iman’s personal barber since their school days. In fact, Iman once said that having Ahrii in the room is essential for his own emotional honesty. “I knew that for me to be any type of consistent and honest in all of my answers, I needed Ahrii there for that,” Iman said in an interview with Boardroom.
“Our best work comes from me having him there to keep it authentic.” That authenticity birthed their hit podcast “Iman Amongst Men”. After getting over a million views in its first season, the brothers doubled down. “Once that family aspect gets brought to the table, it’s kind of hard not to open up,” Iman said. “Those are the biggest smiles we see on the show every time we enter that family discussion.”

Odis W. Shumpert III, the eldest, has largely stayed out of the public eye but left a lasting impact on the younger three. He set the tone early, playing ball with Iman and Ahrii. He even laid the groundwork for competitiveness during their upbringing. His quieter presence doesn’t diminish his role; it solidifies it.
Whereas Kasani Shumpert, the youngest, is the most private of the group. He rarely steps into the spotlight. Still, his role in the family is no less critical. The Shumpert boys don’t operate individually. They have a deeply connected ecosystem. It’s forged by respect, humor, hardship, and the type of loyalty only siblings understand. Together, the Shumpert brothers are a force. They pushed each other to compete, called each other out, and most importantly, held one another accountable. They’ve always had each other’s back.
