From an ex-NBA star to a billionaire, Magic Johnson is many things, including the co-owner of some major sports franchises. But more than the co-owner, the Los Angeles Lakers icon acts as a part of the team, living through their ups and downs. This often reflects in his being affected by the development of his teams, whether it be the Washington Commanders or the Los Angeles Dodgers. The most recent instance has been the decision to retire former Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders) cornerback Darrell Green’s jersey.

The Ageless Wonder has thanked Johnson and the team management on this occasion. “Josh Harris, the real deal. Mitch Rales, the real deal. Earvin Magic Johnson, the real deal… David Blitzer, these guys are the real deal… They just have freely treated me kindly. And guess what? Being treated kindly feels good. And I’m just so grateful for them and I’m the first guy on the bandwagon saying, ‘Guys, let’s get it back,'” Green said, appearing on an episode of ‘FOX 5 Washington DC’.

Notably, the Commanders have decided to retire Green’s jersey number 28 during the 2024 NFL season. While he was already a part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and has received numerous accolades, his former team never retired his jersey. Washington fans had been calling for this honor for decades but the former ownership didn’t feel it necessary. However, that has now changed with the likes of Josh Harris and Magic Johnson at the helm.

The legendary cornerback further mentioned this to be a pleasant experience, which he did not even ask for, but still, the team management did it. While Green feels humbled by the gesture, at the same time he states he is also unashamedly super excited.

“And I hope, man, we can, we can win the Super bowl this year. I’m that excited. … The fact that they’re retiring my jersey, are honoring me. Yes. I really am. So thank you,” he said. The 64-year-old further recollected his 41 years in Washington, DC, and how this place gave him his wife and much of his life. He stated this team to be an intricate part of his life.

A brief look into Darrell Green’s NFL career

Green spent his entire NFL career of 19 years with the Washington Redskins (now Commanders) itself. And apart from being a 2x Super Bowl champ (XXII, XXVI), he earned several other awards and accolades for himself. Notably, he was considered the fastest player in the league, earning himself 4 First-team All-Pro and 7 Pro Bowl appearances.

Additionally, if playing the maximum number of games ever by a defensive player (295) is not enough proof of him being one of the best the game ever witnessed, he has other titles to his name to back this claim. Green was not only included in 80 Greatest Redskins, he was also selected in the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team.
