“It’s A Serious Hit”: 3x NBA Champion Details Just How Dangerous Anthony Davis’ Eye Injury Is

Injuries are common in sports. However, some injuries get so severe that those continue to haunt people for years. Recently, a 3x NBA champion discussed some of the serious eye injuries he has faced during his playing days and how he dealt with them. After witnessing the Lakers star Anthony Davis‘ eye injury, former NBA legend James Worthy discussed the potential dangers if the right measures and protection aren’t taken.
In the latest episode of Free Dawkins, the legend was asked about Davis’ injury. In response, the 3x NBA champion detailed his history of dealing with eye injuries. “It’s a serious hit when you get hit around the eye because you get headaches you have blurry vision and your peripheral vision sometimes leaves and you just feel uncool and uncomfortable.” He further added, “It was nice to see him come back with authority and with some physicality uh so obviously you know, it’s it’s a well healed injury.”

Anthony Davis had to leave early in the first quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers‘ game against the Golden State Warriors due to a scratched cornea. In his absence, the Lakers faced a 128-121 defeat. However, fortunately, he was able to get back in action in the matchup against the Atlanta Hawks.
But as cited by Worthy, it was quite a serious injury. Furthermore, the retired NBA player also details another Lakers star who faced similar issues.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar used to goggles to protect his eyes
During the conversation, James Worthy mentioned how the Captain is the one who suggested he wear goggles during the games. As described above, it isn’t fun having an eye injury, and could lead to serious issues. Kareem also faced numerous eye injuries during his high school basketball game and playing days in the league.
His corneal abrasion used to get so severe that it often caused vision issues, headaches as well as irritation and pain in the eyes. The continuous abrasion soon turned into a corneal erosion syndrome which often caused him pain and miss out on important games. In one of the games, he ended up breaking two bones in his hands after he angrily punched into a backboard stanchion after an eye injury. He had to miss 16 games because of the injury.
