A few days ago, sports reporter Shams Charania reported about the blockbuster multi-team trade involving the Las Vegas Aces, Los Angeles Sparks, and the Seattle Storm. The Sparks acquired the native Kelsey Plum, and the team made the official announcement today. To react to that is Magic Johnson, who is part of the team’s ownership group. After ending the last season with a league record of 8-32, the addition of the 2x WNBA champion adds the necessary spark.

I can’t contain how excited I am about my @LASparks trading for two-time WNBA Champion Kelsey Plum! She’s a complete player and just what my sparks needed— a scorer, playmaker, and defender—but what truly sets her apart is how she elevates her teammates. Her playmaking ability and leadership will be huge for our young Sparks players!” The 5x NBA Champion added the story on his Instagram and his X, welcoming the 30-year-old to the franchise.

Last year, the team added from the draft, Cameron Brink at #2 and Rickea Jackson at #4. But because of the injury to the former made it difficult for the team. Here is where Kelsey Plum’s addition makes it vital, with her importance and being a team player. Even with the Aces, the spotlight was on A’ja Wilson, but Plum was still an important cog for that franchise.

During her 8-year stint with the Aces, Plum was a team-first player. In 2021, her contributions from the bench would earn her the Sixth Player of the Year Award. For the next three seasons since then, she played and started in every regular season game. Her overall contributions last year were not her best, however, this could be the right change required to bring those stats up.

Before Magic Johnson, Sparks players react to Kelsey Plum’s trade

Before the announcement, there were rumors about the newest team on the block adding KP to their roster. That would have teamed her with Coach Natalie Nakase and former rookie Kate Martin, who were both part of the Aces. But it was the ‘home’ decision that finally won. And the Sparks players were certainly excited.

Brink took to Instagram, to share her excitement over the news. “KP my DAWG,” and she added purple and yellow heart emojis. Hamby too showcased her approval and welcomed her former Aces teammate with open arms. The forward added an Instagram story featuring her daughter in Plum’s #10 jersey with a little red heart beside it.

Star guard Lexie Brown was another player who followed suit. She added hearts in the franchise colors alongside a post announcing the news. The players didn’t wait for the team to make the official announcement. It is one of those moves that would no doubt help the Sparks beat their last year’s record. That’s why Magic Johnson was excited by the arrival of the 2x WNBA champion.
