Another epic matchup between the league’s biggest rivals, a win, a 6-9 record, and having your rookie be the game leader – what else can Dwyane Wade ask for? As a co-owner of Chicago Sky, he’s feeling extra tall that his team won 88-87 over their now toughest nemesis, Indiana Fever. It was a game that saw Angel Reese stand out with 25 points, 1 assist and 16 rebounds while Caitlin Clark was held at 17 points. After celebrating Reese’s impressive night, D-Wade joined Chennedy Carter revels in the tough show his team put on. Exactly what he’s demanding of Caitlin Clark.

Wade is showing tremendous support to the Sky ladies while most watchers are villainizing them. He hyped Reese’s performance on X with crown and fire emojis on a picture captured the exact moment Reese made a smug face when she and Clark fell to the ground. Her consistently improving performance clinched the win after which her teammate, Chennedy Carter posted, “pssss I see dead people … #theynotlikeus.

As if the implication in Carter’s cheeky post was not clear, D-Wade requoted her with a shushing emoji along with the “#skytown” and Sky team logo. He’s definitely impressed with his vet along with his rookie. Carter aided the team with 23, points, 5 assists and 2 rebounds. Their other rookie and also Clark’s one-time NCAA rival, Kamilla Cardoso made 16 points, 3 assists, and 10 rebounds.

This is Chicago and Indiana’s third clash this season. The first time created a whole new debate along with birthing the new rivalry between Clark and Carter parallel to the former’s existing college-bred rivalry with Reese. Their second matchup on June 16, Sky introduced Carter in the starting lineup at the last minute keeping the crowd abuzz. By then, all three ladies involved had dismissed the ongoing debate as insignificant to them when they’re only here to play basketball. In the second game, Fever beat Sky, but in this game, Chicago got revenge.

Reese’s consistency has raised Sky to no. 4 in the East and No. 8 in the WNBA. She is the first rookie in WNBA history to record eight straight double-doubles and aided a two-game winning streak. Not just her, Carter and the rest of the team is pumped for their newest star who handled even being horse-collared to the floor like a champ. She’s proving D-Wade’s point that she’s “built for this league.”

Dwyane Wade’s WNBA is not ‘soft’

Since buying a minority stake in his hometown WNBA team in 2023, the 3x NBA champion has not skipped a single moment to hype and motivate Sky players. Especially when Carter was dragged through the mud for roughing up Clark. While Wade’s NBA counterparts mostly have been critical of Carter, he’s been firmly on her side. Very recently he jumped into the debate but with a warning/advice directed at Clark.

Wade said on his The Wine Down podcasthe too went through the rough rite of passage in his rookie year by his veterans like Jamaal Maagloire and PJ Brown and it only made him better. “You’ve got to show us you’re built for this league,” Wade said. “We’re watching a league that people feel like … what they think it’s a soft league because it’s women playing? This is basketball. You’re talking about some of the greatest athletes in women’s sports. What do you think they’re going to do? Do you think they’re just going to let someone come in, `Go ahead and give us 30.’ No, it’s going to be competitive. And Caitlin is going to do the same thing [next year] when she gets a rookie coming in. She’s gonna get up on them and give them a little bit.“‘

Before their second win, Clark also reiterated that “this is basketball” and she expects Carter to be nothing but competitive as she will be. So it does show that she’s got Wade’s mindset down.
