Murray had a massive 50-point bomb for the Nuggets tonight, following a stunning shooting performance. He went 21-25 from the field and shot a ridiculous 8-10 from the three-point line. Usually, such performances involve a lot of free throws to reach 50 points. But Murray became the first player in NBA history to drop 50 points without shooting a single free throw.

Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who had 48 each, held the previous record.

There was absolutely no stopping him tonight, and the Cavs’ defense got burnt by him. During the Orlando bubble, Murray had a few similar performances. But his inability to recreate that in the 2020-21 regular season drew some criticism. This performance is the best way to get back at those critics. At his best, he can score on anyone, and there is no stopping him.

Murray’s 50-point game came on 84% shooting, which is second in history behind Wilt, who had a 50-point game on 87% shooting. During that game, Wilt needed 13 free throws (26 attempts) to reach that mark. Murray doing it without free throws makes his game more impressive.

This was Murray’s third 50-point performance, which is the most in Nuggets history (including playoffs). After this game, there is no denying that Murray has the potential to be one of the best scorers of his generation.

The team needs him to stay consistent now, as they hope to return to the top half of the Western Conference standings. They are currently eighth, after finishing in the top three in the last two seasons.

They have a winnable game up next, as they travel to Atlanta to face the Hawks. A win will help them leapfrog the Warriors into seventh, and they should build on that and move back to the top.
