NBA fans haven’t watched LeBron James in action for a while. But they were treated to the first trailer of the highly anticipated Space Jam 2, which features King James. It is a sequel to the original movie which had Michael Jordan as the star and it released back in 1996. So after 25 years, fans are getting a sequel.

Analysts Jay Williams and Alan Hahn recently discussed the trailer on their ESPN show. Williams expressed his desire to watch Air Jordan back on screen with a cameo. “I would love to see Michael Jordan just pop,” he said.

But Hahn had some upsetting news for Williams. He said, “There will be no reference to Michael Jordan in this thing. As if it never happened. This has been LeBron’s thing.”

Along with Williams, a lot of other fans will also be upset that there is no feature or mention of Jordan in the movie. So it is only a sequel for namesake since it is a completely new movie altogether.

Will LeBron James receive the same love as Michael Jordan for his movie?

In the original movie, Jordan gets kidnapped by Bugs Bunny and is asked to help the Looney Tunes beat the Monstars. In the new movie, LeBron has to win a game against monsters to rescue his on-screen son from an artificial intelligence world.

The trailer shows LeBron writing down a set of names who will help him beat the monsters. The list includes Superman and Gandalf, and this led to a lot of jokes online about LeBron assembling a super team. Fans compared how LeBron needs Superman while Jordan only needed Bill Murray in comparison. Although these are just jokes, some LeBron fans seem to have taken it personally in the replies.

Jordan’s movie was a tremendous hit because it was the first of its kind. There were movies featuring NBA players before like Blue Chips which released two years prior with Shaquille O’Neal. But having arguably the greatest player of all-time on-screen with Looney Tunes, a famous and universally loved cartoon led to huge success.

LeBron is aiming to replicate the success and go beyond as well. His colleagues from the NBA and WNBA, Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard, Klay Thompson, and Diana Taurasi will also feature in the movie. It is likely to be a hit as well with this star power cast and the 25-year wait for a sequel. Space Jam: A New Legacy will release in theaters and on HBO Max on July 16.
