With the Western Conference heating up, the Phoenix Suns are preparing for battle. They have made some big moves in this off-season, as they aim to make the playoffs for the first time in over a decade. They came close to making the playoffs last season but missed out despite winning all eight of their bubble games.

Ever since star player Devin Booker was drafted in 2015, he has never had a competent team around him. But the Suns are looking to change that now.

The Suns started the 2020 off-season with a bang. They made a big trade to bring in 10-time All-Star Chris Paul. After playing one season with the Thunder, Paul wanted a move to a championship team, but it never materialized. Instead, he got his move to an exciting team who are looking to prove a point.

In Paul, Booker finally has a star point guard to facilitate for him, and Paul will bring out the best in the 24-year-old. Coming along with Paul in the trade is Abdel Nader. The Egyptian swingman will be a lower-end rotational player for the Suns. He is an above-average shooter and shot 37% from three last season.

With the 10th pick in the NBA Draft, the Suns selected Jalen Smith, a 6’10 forward from Maryland. He can play both the 4 and 5 in a small lineup due to his ability to stretch the floor. The 20-year-old excels at rebounding, shot-blocking, and also finishing strongly in the post.

So far in Free Agency, the Suns have made a few impactful signings like bringing in Damian Jones and veteran E’Twaun Moore. They have also brought in players who impressed in the previous season like Cameron Payne and Jevon Carter. They have also signed a two-way player, Ty-Shon Alexander. But their biggest signing so far is Jae Crowder.

The former Marquette forward had an excellent season with the Heat and was a crucial part of their Finals run. The Suns will benefit a lot from his defense, ability to shoot, and his hustle. For 3 years and $30 million, this is a great pickup for them.

Phoenix Suns: Confirmed outgoing players

While the trade to bring in CP3 was a big one, they gave up Kelly Oubre and Ricky Rubio, two vital role players. Also included in that trade were Ty Jerome and Jalen Lecque, who had just come off their rookie season. Although Oubre and Rubio were important to the team, the Suns have done well to replace them with Crowder and Paul.

In Free Agency, the Suns lost Cheick Diallo and Frank Kaminsky, whose team options were not picked up by the Suns. Finally, stretch big Aron Baynes also left the team in Free Agency, despite having a career year and becoming an icon in just one season at Phoenix.

The Suns have also sent a qualifying offer for Dario Saric, but they haven’t finalized anything yet. With the roster they have put together so far, the Suns should definitely be a playoff team, who could finish as high as the 5th seed too. And without a doubt, they will be one of the most fun teams to watch with Paul, Booker, and Ayton.
