Now, the usual answer from any player who was with the Bulls in that era would revolve around yes. After all, the GOAT himself, Michael Jordan, was present. The NBA community very well knew that if you were playing alongside MJ, you would have to adjust to his rules and level up to his standards.
However, Kukoc didn’t have to. We’re not sure if that played out in his benefit, but he sure thinks it did.
“Michael (Jordan) literally retired the day I landed in Chicago,” Kukoc revealed. “Him not being with the team that year actually opened the door to play more my natural position, to get minutes and experience of hitting some last second shots.”
Then talking about the then Bulls’ head coach Phil Jackson’s faith in his game, Kukoc said, “Phil had a hunch that I could make those last-minute shots so he gave me opportunities during the first season to shoot those shots, and it paid off later.”
Kukoc had to adjust ultimately
Toni Kukoc reported to the Bulls in 1993 even though they had drafted him in 1990. Michael Jordan retired for the first time that year. However, he also made his first comeback one season later. Inevitably, Kukoc had to adjust.
“Once Michael came back, I needed to adjust my game and play different positions, actually. Overall, once I got adjusted with my weight and strength I think I was fine playing with the Bulls the rest of my career,” the Croatian native concluded.
