The Dallas Mavericks had a great 2019-20 season. They saw their young star Luka Doncic average MVP numbers. Their new big Kristaps Porzingis also looked like he was coming back to form.
One thing that the Mavs realized was that their defense is terrible. In order to compete in the Western conference, they needed to add capable defenders around Doncic and Porzingis.

The most notable addition to the roster is Josh Richardson. The former 76ers small forward is a great defender, and a much needed addition for the Mavs. In a system which already has capable scorers, there won’t be much pressure to score for Richardson.
The Mavericks had the 18th pick, 31st pick, and the 36th pick in this year’s draft. They drafted a great defender in Josh Green and added a capable three point shooter in Tyrell Terry. They also added power forward, Tyler Bey.

While Green adds to the defensive depth, Tyrell is a great 3-point shooter averaging 40.8 percent from the 3-point line. Tyler Bey on the other hand in another great addition to their defense.
The Mavericks have brought in James Johnson in a three-way trade. Johnson only signed a one-year deal, meaning the team can free up the cap space for next season.
They also added Wes Iwundu to their side. He played his first three years in the NBA with the Orlando Magic. He is decent addition but might not be used much by the team.
They also re-signed some crucial players. Trey Burke was re-signed after a stellar display as a backup guard was enough for the same. Willie Cauley Stein also was re-signed to be the backup center. While veteran JJ Barea also re-signed with them, adding more depth to the guard rotation.
Dallas needed to improve on defense and add good shooters, too. They have a very deep roster now with some good quality future players.
Players the Mavericks lost
The most notable loss was that of Seth Curry. Curry is arguably NBA’s best shooter. The threat he provided from the 3-point line was enormous. But the team needed to strengthen in the defense. Getting Josh Richardson and the 36th overall pick was the best the Mavs could get.

Delon Wright was also traded. Wright last year had signed a 3 year, $27 million deal. Trading him and bringing in James Johnson means that they will have much more cap space available for the 2021 off-season. Justin Jackson was also traded. He was scarcely used by the Mavs and was traded in order to make some roster spots for newer additions.
They also have a list of free agents, including Courtney Lee, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Antonius Cleveland, Josh Reaves they haven’t signed.
