Klay Thompson hasn’t played a single minute this season. During Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors, the Golden State Warriors star tore his ACL and is still recovering. His recovery progress has impressed teammate Damion Lee, who himself had a similar injury a few years back.

While speaking to Kerith Burke and Grant Liffmann on the ‘Runnin’ Plays’ podcast, Lee said, “[Klay and I have] had several conversations before about rehab in regards to the ACL. He’d always joke, ‘Damn, D-Lee. I don’t know how you did this twice because this is a lot.’ It’s cool to see what he’s been through and now wanting to come back and go all out.”

Without Thompson, the team struggled. Steph Curry‘s injury made it worse for the Warriors as they slumped to a league bottom 15-50 record. They also missed the playoffs for the first time since 2012.

Klay Thompson: Motivator for the Golden State Warriors youngsters

Despite him missing out on the action, Lee says Klay was influential on the sidelines. “There were a lot of times where he’d just pull younger guys aside and give guys little tidbits,” Lee explained. “It’s unique to see. Everyone is so used to seeing Klay being quiet or reserved. Hearing him actually speak up and talk and give some input is huge. That’s a huge step — not only for him but the team and a lot of the younger guys seeing him as a big brother and as an influence.”

Center Omari Spellman talked to Mark Medina from USA Today about the same thing. “They’re (Steph and Klay) trying to keep it uplifting and loose instead of it being so hectic and chaotic. It’s definitely appreciated that the older guys are taking the time to talk to us younger guys.”
