Since 2009, the Detroit Pistons have managed to make the playoffs just thrice. They were swept in the first round in all three attempts. They let go of their best player Andre Drummond at the trade deadline, fearing he’d not resign in free agency. It was a big surprise when a player of his caliber left for a bag of peanuts. Drummond was sent to Cleveland as Detroit got back  Brandon Knight, John Henson, and a 2023 second-round pick.

So it was obvious that their front office needed more help. On May 26, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Pistons were looking to hire a General Manager. Now in his latest report, he has mentioned that the Pistons have narrowed down to three most likely candidates.

Detroit Pistons: Finally making moves?

When Ed Stefanski was hired as a senior adviser, his priority was to look for a GM. That was two years ago, and now it looks like he is finally ready to make a move. Mark Hughes was reportedly pursued by the Chicago Bulls in April but the Clippers managed to hold on to him. He has been with the Los Angeles franchise for three years now.

Jeff Peterson was named the Brooklyn Nets assistant GM just last year. He joined them after a seven-year stint with Atalanta. At 31 years, he is the youngest candidate among the three. He joined the Hawks initially as an intern, a seasonal assistant after his professional career didn’t have any attractive prospects. In those seven years, he worked up the ladder and was assistant GM for the last three years of his stay at Atalanta.

Troy Weaver is probably the biggest name on the shortlist. He joined the Oklahoma City Thunder as assistant GM back in 2008. He has been Sam Presti’s right-hand man since he was hired by Presti in his second year with the Thunder. Weaver was promoted to Vice President of Basketball Operations a few years back. He is reportedly the favorite to take over in Detroit.

With Drummond gone, there are rumors that stars Derrick Rose and Blake Griffin might follow suit. But an established presence in the front office could stall them, should the Pistons be able to lure talent to Detroit.
