“From That Moment I Was Like Fu** It”: Former Teammate Reveals How Kobe Bryant Helped Curb His Mountain Dew Addiction

Caron Butler played for 16 years in the NBA. During his time in the league, he saw his career take him to various teams and cities. Butler played for nine different teams in his NBA career, making him one of the top players with a diverse team history. Butler saw himself playing alongside Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2004-05 season.

As Butler arrived from the Miami Heat, his introduction to Kobe was nothing short of overwhelming. The Mamba and his teammates had won the three-peat and Kobe just signed a huge contract extension when Butler arrived. 

Butler recently shared his experience on how workouts with Kobe Bryant uplifted his work ethic. On Thursday, Butler joined ‘The Lowe Post,’ hosted by ESPN’s Zach Lowe. Butler spoke to the host and discussed about different things from the past and the present.

Butler has many times informed his fans and the basketball fandom about his addiction to Mountain Dew. The 2011 NBA champion just couldn’t curb his addiction to consume the carbonated drink. 

However, one man successfully put a temporary stop to Butler’s dew addiction, and it was Kobe. Leadership is a quality that inspires other people. To be a great leader, you have to be a great example. That is why Kobe gained so much respect in his playing career. Zach Lowe asked Butler if he had to “hide” his mountain dew addiction from Kobe Bryant when he joined the Lakers. “Oh, 100%. Immediately,Butler replied. 

Butler reveals how Kobe Bryant helped him stop his mountain dew addiction while at Los Angeles 

A 24-year-old Butler when he joined the Lakers was insanely addicted to the beverage. He revealed that he would drink about two liters to satisfy his need. Butler was talented and there was no doubt about it. When he trained with the Lakers, Kobe noticed his skills, but there was something that stopped his potential.

The Mamba came up to Butler, praised his abilities but told him he lacked the conditioning and the stamina. “What type of fuel you using?” Butler recalled Kobe asking him. Bryant always ensured that his teammates were up to the mark with their dieting and it was Butler’s turn to reveal what goes into his body. He kept his dew addiction a secret until it was exposed one day.

“We were on the bus and he comes in the back and I literally had a mountain dew of 1 liter or 2 liter, I don’t know what it was,” Butler began. “I immediately tried to hide it but he saw it and he was like ‘Man come on man. You can’t be putting that in your body man. What the hell are you doing CB?’”

“From that moment I was like Fu** it. All right. I’m going to stop drinking mountain dew, Butler said. I just like pivoted away from mountain dew for probably about the remainder of the season which is probably about five months six months.”

The respect and the fear of Kobe made Butler quit drinking the beverage to which he was once addicted. He never touched it when he played for the Lakers. However, the switch from the Lakers to the Washington Wizards triggered back the addiction for Butler. “The second I went back to Washington, I was back on it,” he revealed.
