Derrick Rose could not contain his emotions on hearing the news of his trade to the New York Knicks. He has had one of the steepest falls in his NBA career due to injuries.  An MVP in his third season, injuries completely disrupted Rose’s career.

Rose had been a part of the Chicago Bulls team for eight years between 2008 and 2016. But since his MVP season in 2011, he had hardly played for the team. However, he had developed a bond with his hometown team that was visible when he was traded to the Knicks.

When Rose received the news about his trade, he was on camera for a documentary. It was a time when rumors around his exit from Chicago had already started.

“You do hear about trade rumors here and there, and this last one, the Knicks one was pretty big because it caught a lot of people’s attention,” Rose said as part of the Stadium documentary. “I’m good with being in Chicago. We’re trying to win there, get back on the right track, so that’s the only thing I can think about. Being in Chicago, but I do hear the rumors. I never really thought about packing up and leaving or demanding a trade.”

Rose was visibly nervous when he got a call from his agent while the camera was running. He broke down on hearing the news of his trade to New York Knicks.

In an interview with Dan Patrick on the Dan Patrick Show last year, Rose detailed the real reason he cried immediately after learning the Bulls traded him.

“That’s my life. Chicago, everything was there,” Rose said. “The first thing I thought of was my family and my son. I knew that like I cherish those moments. Like Steph (Curry) wouldn’t have been Steph if his dad didn’t allow him to be on the court when he was shooting. I love the moments with my son when I’m actually warming up and he’s on the court on the side going crazy or he’s passing me the ball. Those the moments I cherish because I know that growing up, he’s gonna cherish them also.”
