Steve Nash will have all eyes on him next season. The new Nets head coach has been under intense public scrutiny. Many have questioned why an inexperienced coach is being given a team that is truly a championship contender. While Nash was an elite player during his prime, he has no coaching experience whatsoever.

Nash takes over a Brooklyn Nets team that will have Kevin Durant return. After almost a year and a half of injury, Durant will have a lot to prove. KD injured his Achilles in the 2019 NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors.

With LeBron James winning his fourth NBA Championship, Durant is hungry to reclaim his spot as the best player in the NBA, and show that he didn’t need the Warriors to win an NBA Championship.

However, Durant isn’t the only Nets player with something to prove. Kyrie Irving will be looking to show people that he can win a championship without LeBron.

Irving’s attempt to lead his own team to an NBA Finals ended in disappointment. His two-year stint with the Celtics had him falling out with the team and play second fiddle to newcomer Jayson Tatum. After falling out with his two prior franchises, Irving is desperate to show the world he can be a good teammate.

With one of his closest friends by his side, he will have a good chance to do so.

But perhaps no one has more to prove to the world than Steve Nash himself. The former tw0-time MVP comes into his first coaching position without being a coach on any level. He was a consultant for the Golden State Warriors, where his relationship with Durant was established.

Nash must show to the league that his lack of experience is not a hindrance, but a positive. Nash will have a great coaching staff alongside him, including reportedly his former coach Mike D’Antoni.

Steve Nash sat down to speak with Steve Serby of the New York Post. When asked about what he felt after seeing Kyrie Irving play for the first time, Nash waxed lyrical about his ability on the ball.

“That’s a tough question because I’m sure I saw him play in college once or twice, but barely remember it. … When you watch someone play hundreds of times, it’s harder to remember the first time. But it was obviously clear to me what a prodigious skill level he had and a flair for the game.”

Nash also spoke about the similarities between Irving and NBA legend Isiah Thomas, saying that Thomas was his idol growing up. “They’re two guys that were incredibly skilled and creative, and Isiah was my idol, so I can definitely see the comparisons straight away.”

Irving will have a head coach in Nash who understands his position perfectly. Nash was a fantastic point-guard during his playing days and considered a pioneer of the position.
