The Los Angeles Lakers are the NBA champions for 2020; however, it seems like the celebrations may not last too long. The Lakers will be looking to run it back next season. With LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the only two stars with a sure place in the Lakers next season, ‘LakeShow’ is practically going into a rebuild.

Players such as KCP and Rajon Rondo are expected to opt-out of their player options. Whereas Dwight Howard, J. R. Smith, Jared Dudley, and more are unrestricted free-agents this off-season.

With large contracts for Davis and James, the Lakers will be struggling to make decisions about whom to bring back.

Many of the Lakers‘ role players have seen their value skyrocket, with good performances in the post-season. Rondo and KCP will be rejecting their player option to maximize their earnings for the next year.

The Lakers are strapped for cash, and their best course of action to bring replacements is through trades and signing lesser role players. The latter should only be the course of action if and when they exhaust all their options in the players’ market.

Winning a championship is very difficult in the NBA, and going back-to-back, much more so. The Lakers face a genuine challenge in re-assembling their team. They need to make the right decisions regarding whom to bring back and to let go.

One player who looks set to stay with the Lakers the next season is Danny Green. In an interview with Forbes, Green suggested that the supporting cast for the Lakers will make little difference to their title hopes.

“It’s going to be tough because we have so many free agents, with 10 guys that are free agents. Trying to bring everybody back and reconstruct the contracts, it’s going to be difficult, but when you have the nucleus of LeBron and AD — if they bring back AD — that’s pretty much what you need. You don’t need much else around them.”
