How will Anthony Edwards Fit in with the Minnesota Timberwolves?

Anthony Edwards is going to be the most scrutinized rookie of the next season since he was the number one overall pick in the Draft. With heaps of talent and athleticism, many people have touted Edwards as a future all-star based on his talent. But questions about his mentality and dedication to the game have been raised consistently.

Despite those lingering doubts, the Minnesota Timberwolves decided to use the number one pick for him over other guard prospects like LaMelo Ball. Their last number one overall pick, Karl-Anthony Towns, is still with the team, and they have the number two pick from the KAT Draft in D’Angelo Russel as well. These are all players that entered the league with high expectations.

Edwards may be looked at a little closer than before after his recent quotes about him not really liking basketball. But if he delivers on the court, all will be forgiven. The question is, can he?

The Timberwolves needed a good two-guard next to Russell, and Edwards fulfills that. LaMelo Ball would have needed the ball in his hands a lot more, so it makes sense that the T’Wolves went towards Edwards. He adds some dynamism to their backcourt. While Russel plays with a soft touch and a lot of finesse, Edwards is capable of just hammering himself into the rim for a bucket.

The T’Wolves have always been looked at as ‘soft’, especially the modern team after the Jimmy Butler incident from a few years ago. Will this environment help Edwards develop the cut-throat edge needed for players to succeed in the league? There are also on-court questions around this move. Does Edwards have the required IQ to ensure he is in good spots while playing off-ball? Will his poor decision-making from college continue into the pros?

Edwards is one of the more dynamic players; in this sense, he has real potential to either boom or be a bust. The Wolves will be praying that this move works out. They committed to building a championship core and are off to a good start. If they can reel Edwards in, help him develop not only his skill but his mental toughness, the future of the franchise will look brighter.

Now that players like Ricky Rubio are back on the squad, he will have a mentor to guide him through this. The future is surely very exciting for this player and this franchise.
