The future of Giannis Antetokounmpo has been one of the hottest topics after the Bucks’ early departure from the 2020 postseason. There have been a lot of rumors surrounding his decision in the 2021 free agency.

Due to that, this is in-fact a make-or-break year for the team. If the Bucks fail to achieve anything significant in this season, it could lead to their franchise player’s departure. NBA analyst Brian Windhorst talked about the Bucks and Giannis’ situation in a recent interview. He said:

“No, the Bucks have remained confident, I have to say this. Since the day season ended, they weren’t feeling great about everything at that time, but talk to those people. They are like ‘look Giannis is not like Kevin Durant. Giannis is not like LeBron James, he is a different guy. We believe he is all in with us. We believe he is gonna stay.’ And they consistently said that.”

The Bucks’ have been pretty aggressive this offseason with a hope to improve the roster around the Greek Freak. All that is left is for Giannis to re-sign what is arguably the biggest contract in NBA history. Windhorst added:

“If Giannis recommits, if Giannis re-signs, whether it’s this weekend or it’s in two weeks, he has until December 21st. The Bucks get an A++ on this offseason. Not necessarily because I think they made the greatest moves, but getting that player to stay with you, to give you runway, is as great as an accomplishment as a team like the Bucks can have.”

Re-signing Giannis for the next few seasons will give the Bucks time to make changes in the roster. However, if he decides to leave the franchise, they would have to go back into a rebuilding phase for the coming years.

Should Giannis Antetokounmpo stay with the Milwaukee Bucks?

Committing on a long-term basis is a two-edged sword for the two-time MVP. If the Bucks fail to build a competent roster around him, he will be stuck with them hence wasting the prime years of his career.
