LA Clippers lost to the underdogs Dallas Mavericks for the second time in the past one week. They had to give it all in winning the ones they did. This exposed their defensive woes as the franchise could do nothing to manage and stop Luka Doncic from troubling them.

It was obvious that the head coach Doc Rivers had to answer some tough questions in the post-game conference. But how often do we get to see a head coach defending his team’s point guard who was put into the play for effective defense? Let’s get to know more about it.

LA Clippers failed miserably at stopping the Mavs from scoring

We have all seen how Reggie Jackson and Lou Williams have struggled with their defense. Reggie played almost half of the fourth quarter and again in the entire overtime. He was put on Luka Doncic on the final and the most pivotal possession in the game. What followed that is a historic NBA moment now.

In the interview, the journalists questioned the head coach whether it was a good decision. The head coach answered in a self-criticizing manner explaining, “Well obviously, Luka made a shot, right Yohan (journalist), So clearly we could have done something else. But it’s only three seconds left. I thought overall Reggie [Jackson] did pretty well. But the last play, we let them go left, put a shot. The bottom line is the last play didn’t lose the game for us. It was our entire play from the second quarter on.”

This is how he took the charges off Reggie Jackson and confessed that they failed at large and not just at the end of the game. Watch the entire interview here-

How far can the Mavericks go from here?

The Mavs have been successfully able to study the weaknesses in the Clippers and use them for their good. For one, they must have specifically targeted Reggie knowing that he is not capable of great defense, not until now. Reggie surely got 14 points on the board but failed when he was most needed. Center player Ivica Zubac who is in a good flow this post-season could time just 22 minutes in the game. Again a plus for the Mavs because he could have defended well against rotation players like Boban Marjanovic.

Now, just in case, the Mavs win the 5th game because they will most probably have Kristaps Porzingis back with them, it will be a nightmare for the Clippers. The team which is a favorite to lift the title can not begin the NBA Playoffs 2020 in this fashion. Let’s see how the Clippers bounce back on August 25th.
