Portland Trail Blazers star Carmelo Anthony was “proud” of Michael Jordan and the Jordan brand announcing donation for fighting racial inequality.

Jordan announced on Friday that he and his brand would be donating $100 million over the next ten years to organizations “dedicated to ensuring racial equality, social justice, and greater access to education.

“We represent a proud family that has overcome obstacles, fought against discrimination in communities worldwide. That works every day to erase the stain of racism and the damage of injustice,” a statement announcing the donation read. “It’s 2020, and our family now includes anyone who aspires to our way of life. Yet as much as things have changed, the worst remains the same.”

Carmelo Anthony hailed the step from Jordan to make the donation and believed it would have a long-term impact.

“A multi-layered problem requires multi-layered solutions. Proud of Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand for this big step that will have a long term impact in the fight to end racial inequality,” he tweeted on Saturday.

George Floyd’s death was “painful” for Michael Jordan and he called for unified action

The initiative from Jordan came soon after his brand’s parent company, Nike, had announced that it would donate $40 million over the next four years towards the fight against racial inequality. Last week, the Jordan brand had released a video urging people to act against the problem prevailing in society.

Jordan had previously released a statement on the death of George Floyd, calling for unified action. Considering Jordan’s lack of action on previous such issues, it was uncharacteristic of him raising his voice on Floyd’s death.

“I stand with those who are calling out the ingrained racism and violence toward people of color in our country. We have had enough,” the statement read. “We must listen to each other, show compassion and empathy and never turn our backs on senseless brutality.”

Jordan’s statement added to many others in the NBA community commenting on the issue. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has been vocal on social media since the death of Floyd.

Others NBA players have participated in the protests, including Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown and Minnesota Timberwolves’ Karl-Anthony Towns. Apart from the NBA community, many other celebrities have also reacted to Floyd’s death, condemning racial discrimination and calling for action. It is an incident that has led to nation-wide protests against injustice in society.
