Can we agree it’s impressive marrying a college love and sharing highs and lows together, even after rising to fame? That’s exactly what happened with Kansas University’s head coach Bill Self and his beloved partner, Cindy Self, who have been together since their college days.

“If there was such a thing as a perfect coach’s wife, Cindy would be her,” shared Bill. Over three decades later, the couple still stands strong and shares two children together: son Tyler Self and daughter Lauren Self. Precious! While Cindy often serves as a support system behind her husband, she has an impressive career of her own.

Cindy, a beloved wife is an established individual

Beyond her role as a supportive wife, Cindy Self is an accomplished individual in her own right. The now-mother of two was involved in sports growing up – softball, gymnastics, and track. But she seems to have dropped the interest in the eventual years. She now holds a degree in education instead and has been involved in various philanthropic endeavors; her commitment and compassion aligning well with Bill’s own.

Cindy’s story with Billy Eugene Self began in college. The pair first saw each other at Oklahoma State University in the mid-80s. At that time, Bill was a renowned basketball player, while his then-girlfriend, Cindy, was a cheerleader. He was pursuing a degree in business.

After seeing each other for four years, the couple knew what the future held for them, and the wedding bells finally rang in 1988. Since then, Cindy has been by Bill’s side at every step, from his assistant coaching jobs at Kansas to his first head coaching position at Oral Roberts, and then stops at Illinois. “Being a coach’s wife isn’t easy, and it takes on many challenges, but she has been with me through every step of this journey and has been so supportive and sacrificed so much for me to chase my dream,” Bill had expressed during his Hall of Fame ceremony.

But, this isn’t the only thing she did.

She has even cheered for the Jayhawks men’s basketball team at Allen Fieldhouse. But that’s not all. While both have their separate professional tasks, the couple also collaborates on their youth charity foundation, “The Assist.” Impressive, right? Their family isn’t limited to just this power couple.

“She is unselfish of my time, she is independent but always there to focus on the team and our family,” added head coach. Their legacy continues with their daughter Lauren, a 2013 graduate of Kansas who works for Texas Young Life Community, and their son Tyler, who played on the KU basketball team from 2012 to 2017. Currently, Lauren is married to Hayden Browning and has two daughters, while Tyler is the general manager of the Austin Spurs in the NBA G League.

Overall, Bill and Cindy have successfully spent more than half of their lives together. Be it their children or careers, everything has been on point. Still, they are vying for even more.
