They say, ‘Teamwork makes the dream work.’ And if there’s one team that proved this tonight, it was the LSU Tigers. Sometimes, all it takes is a dip in performance to bring out the inspired one that the LSU roster showed against the Vanderbilt Commodores. In a game that saw neither the Tigers nor the Commodores letting up, it was LSU that stepped its game up when needed. And it was a show where the team didn’t just display its offensive prowess but also its defensive capability.

Coming off of two losses against the No. 1 ranked South Carolina Gamecocks and the Mississippi State Bulldogs, LSU got back in the groove against the Florida Gators on February 5. And tonight, at the Vanderbilt University Memorial Gym, they continued their momentum with an exemplary performance, winning another away game 85-62.

Aneesah Morrow and Angel Reese once again showed that their combination is capable of taking LSU all the way this season, just like their maiden title run in 2023. It was a double-double by both of them that helped LSU cross the line. The freshman No. 24 bagged 13 points and 10 rebounds. At the same time, the All-American forward collected 15 points and 15 rebounds in the game.

Another surprising performance was from Flau’jae Johnson. She made 17 points after picking up her pace in the last minutes of the fourth quarter. Moreover, Hailey Van Lith grabbed 13 points and 8 rebounds for the team. Another player worth mentioning who also made a double-digit contribution to the team’s total is Mikaylah Williams, with 10 points.

The Lady Tigers are undoubtedly re-asserting their dominance by building their defensive game. The team had 31 of 57 defensive rebounds in tonight’s game. Undeniably, Kim Mulkey is using the right strategies to make LSU one of the unbreakable teams again this season. While everyone was full of praise for the Tigers, Vanderbilt, too, had a few silver linings.

While the Tigers dominated play in the fourth quarter to seal the deal, the Commodores hung in there as long as they could. Vanderbilt’s guard Iyana Moore and forward Khamil Pierre were the only players on their roster to reach double digits, with 17 and 13 points, respectively. While Khamil Pierre on the Commodores did show some good defense with 11 rebounds on her card, it was not enough to stop the raging Tigers.

Surprisingly, their score leader, Jordyn Cambridge, could not add too much to the team’s total, with 7 points, 3 rebounds, and 6 assists. It’s safe to say that the crowd at the Vanderbilt University Memorial Gym got what they came for. The Tigers and the Commodores put up a great show, and the home team gave the reigning NCAA champions a run for their money.

At the end of the day, though, the LSU Tigers stepped up their game when needed, which helped them carry forward their winning momentum. They will now play Alabama at home for their next conference match in this campaign. As for the Commodores, they’re headed to Georgia.

“Spirit of life lies in expression”. As a boy-next-door growing up in the mystic vibes of Ajmer, I would often wonder about the towering ballers’ ability to forge unity for a common goal. Big guys watching each other’s back and creating brouhaha and belligerence for the glory was a tempting feeling.
