

A coach is the driving force behind the success of any team in any sport. This is true in the case of college basketball as well. However, money is a powerful influence in the game these days. Apart from the players, coaches are also making headlines following their lucrative deals in the NCAA.

Kansas University has recently extended its contract with the head basketball coach Bill Self. As a result of this lifetime deal, Bill now becomes the highest-paid coach in the NCAA division.

Bill Self becomes the richest boss in the NCAA
Bill Self will be earning a whopping $53 million in his next 5 years. He has overtaken the Kentucky’s Wildcats boss John Calipari who had an income of $44 million. Bill Self’s base pay for this season will be $11 million along with the professional services and various royalties. This also includes a deferred income of $7.2 million which was slashed during Covid. Moreover, the compensation salary for the 2023-24 season amounts to $13 million. In addition to this, Self will also receive a retention bonus of $5 million if he provides his services to the Jayhawks for the next five years.

There are a lot of incentives for Bill in this lucrative deal. He would receive $100,000 if Kansas won the Big 12 Conference this year and he is named Coach Of The Year. Also, another $50,000 will be given to him for participating in the NCAA tournament. Following this, if he leads Kansas to the Sweet 16 he will be rewarded another $100,000. Apart from this, $150,000 will be deposited in his account for reaching the Final Four of the tournament. Last but not least, if the Kansas Jayhawks become national champions, Bill will receive a massive emolument of $200,000.

Bill Self has had an illustrious career as a coach in the NCAA. He has coached Kansas for almost 20 seasons. Bill has led the Jayhawks to lift the NCAA Division I championships twice in 2008 and 2022. Furthermore, he has won 17 Big 12 regular season titles. Not only this, Self was the AP College Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2016 and a Naismith College Coach of the Year in 2012 for his immaculate performances. As a result, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame back in 2017.
The record-making deal made by Kansas has created quite a buzz overnight. However, it will be interesting to see if Bill Self makes everyone’s money worth this season. We will have to wait and see if he justifies this huge amount spent on him.
