There’s one question running through the minds of Baylor, and thirty other teams right now–how do you stop Cooper Flagg? The Duke phenom has been on fire recently, even after injuring his ankle. In the second-round matchup against the Baylor Bears, Flagg currently has a very efficient 15 points at the end of the first half. But that’s not what makes his performance so special!

Although his dominance knows no bounds, Cooper Flagg just can’t seem to catch a break! The Blue Devils forward had recently suffered quite a bad fall on his ankle, but the recovery wasn’t as long as expected. However, he took a serious blow to the eye early on in this matchup.

Baylor Bears forward Norchad Omier was on the way to the basket, and he ended up clipping Flagg’s right eye. Omier, a 6-foot-7 senior known for his physicality, drove left toward the basket as Flagg rotated over to contest the shot. As Omier elevated, his off-hand swung upward, catching Flagg squarely in the right eye. Flagg crumpled to the floor, clutching his face, while the whistle blew—a common foul called on Omier, sending Flagg to the line for two shots. Replays showed the contact was incidental but forceful, with Omier’s arm extending naturally during his motion. No review for a flagrant foul was initiated, a decision that immediately sparked debate among fans and analysts.

There was visible discoloration and swelling on his eye, and to make things worse, blood was also involved. He went to the bench for about six or so minutes, working with the trainers and medical staff to quickly return to play.

Cooper Flagg’s resilience is what makes him special. To be out on the hardwood floor with a black eye? That’s something that everyone can respect. Not to mention, the poke did nothing in slowing him down, it only made him put in more work! The six-foot-nine forward gave his 100% on both ends of the court after his return.

There’s no doubt that this injury gave Duke fans a real scare. But what is the NCAA community saying about this game? What was their reaction to the injury? Let’s find out.

Fans react to Cooper Flagg’s injury, bring up officiating concerns

Social media went wild during this Round of 32 showdown! There was only one person in focus, and that was Cooper Flagg. The six-foot-nine forward was balling out against the Bears, putting up 15 points in the first half alone. However, his injury caught the eyes of many fans online, who took to X to express their concerns.

The immediate reaction to his injury was filled with worry and panic. “Cooper Flagg has a black eye and it’s swelled up you can’t make this up”, one fan said on X, posting a photo of the NBA prospect’s injured face. A lot of fans agreed with this sentiment, while some believed that the foul might have been on purpose. “Flagrant 2, warrants an immediate ejection!” A user said, implying that the act was intentional.

Another user doubled down on the idea that Omier injured Flagg on purpose. “Appeared? It was a dirty f–king slap down to the face. Omier knew what he was doing.” They said on X, calling out the Baylor Bears forward!

However, Flagg’s injury wasn’t the only thing on people’s minds during the matchup. According to some NCAA fans on X, referees are too quick to support the Blue Devils. For example, Cooper Flagg has gotten 9 free-throw attempts with ten minutes left in the game still! A fan pointed this out. “Cooper Flagg gets that LeBron treatment from the refs.” They said, comparing the Duke superstar to LeBron James.

No one can refute that stars in the NBA get special treatment as compared to everyone else. Players like LeBron James, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Jayson Tatum go to the line over fouls that might not be called for others. So when fans compare Flagg to LeBron in this situation, it’s not necessarily a compliment.

Another fan added their input. “One thing for certain two things for sure when you play Duke you have to beat Duke convincingly because the refs will always blow the whistle in their favor.” They said, implying that the officiating favors the Blue Devils intentionally.

Regardless, Cooper Flagg’s eye injury did nothing to slow him down. No sir, not at all! The six-foot-nine forward is approaching this matchup with all guns blazing, showing no signs of any injury in his eye or ankle. Omier’s blow might not have been intentional, but it did showcase to the NCAA that Cooper Flagg is here to play!
