It all started with a game against Villanova. Coming off an eight-game win streak, the Huskies had a chance to add one more. With 3.1 seconds left in the game, it was Alex Karaban, a staggering career 83% free throw shooter, standing at the line with a chance to tie the game.

He had the chance to push UConn into overtime, but the opportunity slipped away. Of course, even the best players face setbacks. And for Karaban, this was his.

But, unlike others, Karaban swallowed this tough pill with a keen eye on the future. In the early hours of the morning, around 2 a.m., an unyielding chill after their flight back from Villanova greeted the Huskies. Most would head straight to bed. Karaban, however, chose a different path.

He must have recalled that he missed both attempts at sealing Villanova’s 68-66 victory. As it was a game that didn’t go as planned, head coach Dan Hurley didn’t bother sugarcoating it either. Sometimes you’ve got to eat —-,” he said, pointing out that for Karaban, a player whose first two years at UConn had been practically perfect, this was a tough lesson.

But this isn’t the real Karaban and Hurley bond people are used to on and off-court.

Is Karaban ready to keep up with Dan Hurley’s expectations?

The relationship between UConn head coach Dan Hurley and star forward Alex Karaban is the foundation of UConn’s recent dominance. Over three years, they’ve built a bond fueled by trust, hard work, and a shared love for basketball. Hurley’s intense coaching style isn’t for everyone, but Karaban has embraced it, crediting his coach for shaping him on and off the court.

From the start, Hurley saw Karaban as a key piece of a championship team. Karaban has proven him right, leading UConn in scoring and setting the tone for the team. Their connection goes beyond the game, with both prioritizing basketball and family above all else.

Karaban calls Hurley the most influential person in his life, guiding him through highs and lows. Hurley sees Karaban as UConn’s heart, someone who elevates everyone around him. Together, they’ve made history and aim to keep UConn at the top.

Despite the setback, UConn’s overall performance has been strong. Their rise to No. 9 in the AP poll speaks volumes about their potential. With a balanced roster, including contributions from Solo Ball, Hassan Diarra, and big man Samson Johnson, the Huskies have the depth to contend at the highest level.

But the road ahead is tough, as Georgetown, Providence, and other Big East battles will challenge this team. Yet, as Hurley emphasized, it’s all part of the process. Karaban will use this experience to refine his game, and the Huskies will regroup.

The Huskies’ coach, Hurley, has always preached that every loss is a lesson, and this one was no different. For Karaban, the task now is to come back stronger.

And he just seems to be doing it. What do you think?
