Gabbie Marshall played a major role in the win against UConn in the Final Four game. But it didn’t come without a cost. Huskies star Aaliyah Edwards was called for the offensive foul on Marshall. Many fans felt that the decision was unfair and shared their annoyance on social media. Caitlin Clark too was called out by the fans but the major wrath was on Marshall. After the game, the Iowa guard said she had no other choice but to delete her social media because of hate comments. But now, her masterful display in the Championship Game has fans taking back their words.

Sharing the support on Twitter for the guard a fan wrote, “A player consistently getting away with move that’s a foul vs a borderline call (that was beautifully sold, shout out to Gabbie Marshall and f**k everyone who sent hate and threats her way) that essentially decided the game… yeah man those are apt comparisons.”

Gabbie Marshall’s reaction after reading hate comments

I’ve gotten a lot of hate comments,” Marshall said Sunday before the national championship. “I don’t know. I’m not the one that made the call. So I’m not sure why they’re mad at me personally.” The call right at the end was called with 3.9 seconds remaining on Aaliyah Edwards for a moving screen. During the play, the Huskies were trying to get the ball to Paige Bueckers.

Even coach Lisa Bluder was unhappy with the fan’s reaction and came in support of the guard. Calling them “Unbelievable” and questioning them why Marshall was being targeted since she was doing her job. Highlighting that she did the job “really, really well.”

Marshall said the focus should have been on how the teams played and not the decision. “I’ve deleted social media,” she said. “I feel like it just kind of overlooked the fact that I played my butt off the whole game trying to guard her, trying to get over screens the whole game and feel like that one play just consumed everything. That’s all anyone’s talking about. They’re not talking about the fact that it was a great game between two great teams.”

This was Marshall’s last for the collegiate career. She has decided to complete her education and not opt for the WNBA draft.
