For the undefeated UConn Huskies, the mission is perfection. For the South Carolina Gamecocks, it’s pure revenge. And Sarah Strong knows exactly what kind of mindset she and her teammates are going to carry into it.

While the Huskies currently sit with a perfect 38–0 record in this season, they aren’t focusing on protecting a perfect record. Rather, it will be about making the moment count, especially for the players who won’t get another shot at it.

So when asked on SportsCenter whether UConn’s approach is not just about winning but winning a certain way, Strong didn’t talk about dominance.

“I would say some of that, but I think it’s also – enjoying the last few games with the seniors staying present, and pretty much going all out for the seniors,” she said.

That response says a lot about where this UConn team stands right now.

Have they been dominant in the 2025-26 NCAA season? Yes! Have they overwhelmed their opponents? Yes! But internally, the focus is far more personal because they want to finish their journey the right way for the seniors who built the foundation of this run.

However, whether this mindset takes them into the championship game remains to be seen. Because waiting on the other side is the South Carolina Gamecocks, who will be looking for blood.

This isn’t just another Final Four matchup.

Last season, Geno Auriemma’s Huskies handed Dawn Staley’s Gamecocks an 82–59 loss in the national championship game to deny them the title. But now, they will face each other again as South Carolina returns with a 35–3 record and a chance to flip that story.

Offensively, both of them aren’t that far apart. The Huskies are averaging 87.9 points per game, while the Gamecocks are at 87.1. However, when it comes to defense, the Huskies have a clear edge. Out of their thirty-eight games, Sarah Strong & Co. have limited their opponents to just 50.1 points per game. while the Gamecocks held their opponents at 57.5.

Which is what makes this matchup so compelling. Its purpose versus revenge. And if Strong’s words are anything to go by, UConn isn’t just showing up to win. They’re going all out for each other.

Why Sarah Strong & Co. Might Be Geno Auriemma’s Most Unlikely Masterpiece

For all the dominance the UConn Huskies have shown this season, even head coach Auriemma didn’t quite see this coming. To give you a quick understanding, the Huskies are on a 54-game win streak right now.

So, after punching their ticket to a third straight Final Four, the veteran coach called this group one of the teams he’s most proud of. And not just because they’re undefeated.

“We have a team that is so well connected… and they root for each other like no other team I’ve ever had,” Auriemma said. “Carrying all that undefeated stuff is not the easiest thing in the world, but they’ve handled it with humbling grace. and I don’t think I’ve ever been prouder to take a team to the Final Four than this one.”

That’s what makes this run different.

While many fans questioned this team before they entered this season, as they were to play without Paige Bueckers and a roster that mixed experience with new faces, the Huskies still delivered.

“(Coach Auriemma) doesn’t really give those nice words to us often, but we know secretly deep down he really loves us and cares for us and wants the best for us,” sophomore forward Sarah Strong said as per Twin Cities.

A group that wasn’t supposed to look this complete, peaking at the exact moment the stakes couldn’t be higher, the story doesn’t need any extra buildup.

But, with the Gamecocks standing in their way, the Huskies are about to find out if everything they’ve built this season can hold up when it matters most. So make sure to tune in on April 3rd to find out who takes the win home.
