Since 2018, Dan Hurley has been working relentlessly to upbring a solid roster that other opponents fear to compete. But, ever wondered how much he gets paid for to do that? And what about his contract extension and other incentives, if UConn wins this time again?

Coaching the Huskies for the past 5 years, Hurley led the team for the NCAA Tournament in 2021 (first time in since 2016), however, they lost the game in the first round itself. Then again in 2022, they made a run for it, but reaped a similar result. But they didn’t give up and reached the 2023 March Madness all through and won the national championship title. As a result, in June 2023, Dan agreed to a 6-year extension with UConn, which lasts till 2029.

Dan Hurley’s salary

As of 2024, Dan Hurley’s annual salary is around $5 million, with a maximum bonus of $2 million, of which $7, 75,000 have been paid in the 2022-23 season. Notably, the new contract holds a value of $32.1 million over these six years. With this amount as his annual salary, Hurley also has the opportunity to earn an additional compensation through performance-based incentives.

The work he and his staff have done over the past five years in rebuilding our program, which culminated in the Huskies once again reaching the pinnacle of college basketball, has been nothing short of remarkable. I know all of UConn Nation is ecstatic that Dan will continue to lead this program for the foreseeable future,” said UConn’s athletics director David Benedict announcing Hurley’s contract extension.

For his coaching excellence this season, Hurley has been named the Sporting News National Coach of the Year Award. This award is given to the best head coach in men’s college basketball in NCAA Division I competition. He has also been named as the 2024 Big East Coach of the Year Award.

Notably, his career record stands at 255-160. His record at UConn tallies at 104-55. UConn’s regular season performance has been nothing short of remarkable, ranking at #4 with an overall record of 31-8, including a 13-7 record in the Big East. They won the Big East Conference title by taking over Marquette in a 73-57 victory.

The conversation that changed UConn men’s basketball team’s fate

6 years ago, Dan Hurley came across his destiny as the legendary Coach K pulled him aside when he had just finished his 6th season at Rhode Island. His oozing potential has turned the program into an Atlantic 10, where the Rams upset Oklahoma and grabbed a win in the NCAA Tournament opener. However, the victory was short-lived as their limited roster knelt down to Duke in an 87-62 loss.

This came out to be a turning point in Hurley’s life as he met Coach K while going through the postgame handshake line. Then a half hour later they both crossed paths again at PPG Arena when Coach K grabbed him and said, “You’ve kind of run your course here. You need to take one of these jobs. You’ve run your course here.”

Hurley loved his job at Rhode Island, however, Coach K’s message to Hurley carried weight. “I’ve known him my whole life. He’s somebody I’ll reach out to a couple times a year and bounce some things off of, ideas about leadership or what have you,” Hurley expressed the valuable relation with Coach K.  Their relation goes way back when Coack K used to visit Bobby Hurley Sr.’s gym while recruiting, where Dan’s older brother Bobby used to play for those legendary Duke teams.

Few days later after receiving Coach K’s message, Hurley and his wife were entertaining UConn president Susan Herbst along with David Benedict while they pitched them the idea of a job at UConn. Not so long after that meeting, Hurley was announced at UConn’s head coach.

“Dan is extremely process-oriented in the way he looks and views and how he builds something. Certainly, what he was hired to do, he’s accomplished and gotten the program back to a place where Coach [Jim] Calhoun had built it. And to do some things this year that have never been accomplished before, is almost jaw dropping,” said Benedict after the Huskies defeated Stetson and Northwestern and reached Sweet 16.
