“I’ll Be Out”: Staying Out of Action After Knee and Hip Surgeries, Coach K Provides Latest Update on Health

Mike Krzyzewski, popularly known to basketball fans as Coach K, is a living legend. The Naismith Hall of Fame coach has set many records at Duke. Coach K called it a day last year after providing services to the Blue Devils for 42 years.

While his heart remains young, his body demands special care from time to time. Let’s get into the details of what Coach K shared in a recent episode of The Brotherhood!

Coach K provides an update on his upcoming surgery

The Brotherhood podcast recently released Episode 16 featuring the legendary Duke’s coach Mike Krzyzewski. Talking with the host — Ryan Young, Coach K shared his thoughts on several things.

Halfway through the interview, Mike gives an update about his past and future surgeries. Coach K said,” I gotta get my ankle replaced. So I’ve had both knees and both hips replaced. But the ankle, it’s a little bit different. I’m going to have that done in January. So I’ll be immobile for a while.

Surgeries and injuries are nothing new for Coach K. Mike Krzyzewski lost a season at Duke in 1994. Coach K had to undergo surgery to recover from an unfortunate back injury. Moreover, in 1999, in a surgical procedure, his left hip was replaced. In addition to this, Mike has osteoarthritis, which is a chronic joint condition. Furthermore, in 2017, he had a successful replacement of his right knee.

In spite of all his injuries, Mike Krzyzewski is still passionate about hitting the gym. The host Ryan Young pointed it out and said, “You are in there still lifting weights occasionally up there. I’ve seen you go up there and bench. I want to say you bench more than coach Scheyer.”

Jokingly replying to Ryan, Mike said,” No, he’s 40 years younger, and he does a lot more reps. I like going in there when you guys are not there,  just try to maintain. And when you have replacements, you have shock absorbers or support. So I do enough to try to keep strong.”

Mike Krzyzewski carried the Blue Devils on his shoulders from 1980 to 2022. Coach K ended his NCAA career at Duke with a record of 1,202–368. It’s no surprise that he had to be active in the gym to maintain his physical stature at Duke for so many years.
