Brad Underwood’s Illinois isn’t just winning on the court this season; it’s making big moves off the court, too. While the Fighting Illini navigate a season that saw them reach the March Madness Final Four for the first time in 21 seasons, their front office has made a locker room move ahead of their game against UConn that might not raise their ceiling immediately, but is definitely a piece for the coming years.

Quentin Coleman, a four-star guard and No. 1-ranked recruit from Missouri, is now heading to Illinois. Coleman, ranked 34th in the nation among recruits, recently announced his commitment to Underwood’s program in a ‘late move’ nearly a month after he decommitted from Wake Forest, per 247Sports.
“I just felt like it was the best decision for my family and me,” Coleman said of his commitment. “I had just decommitted from a great program, and after I reopened (my recruitment), Illinois was one of the first schools to hit me up. They were in the rotation and talking to me before (first commitment).”
Illinois adds a big late commitment in the form of 2026 guard Quentin Coleman.

Notably, Coleman is one of the most impressive shooting guards going around in the recruiting market, ranking seventh in the nation. The Missouri native is averaging over 22 points and 6 rebounds in his latest high school season, while shooting around 63% from the field. This perfectly reflects that Underwood’s team is bringing in a dynamic shooter who can complement the likes of Keaton Wagler in the backcourt next season.
Coleman has just one goal for his freshman season in 2026: to use his talents in the collegiate circuit and help the Fighting Illini win a National Championship. “Coach’s vision for me is coming in there and helping to win a National Championship, Coleman said. “Hopefully, they get it done this year, but I’m trying to help get him another one next year.”
Furthermore, it isn’t just the performance that’s the only silver lining in Illinois’ move; it’s Coleman’s zeal to consistently improve and raise his ceiling. For context, Coleman wasn’t even among the ranked recruits last year, as per recruiting analyst Jamie Shaw. But the way Coleman has turned his fate around in just a brief period is more than commendable for a high-school player.
“Coleman’s senior season has been epic. He moved comfortably from role player to featured star. Elevating his high school team as high as No. 2 in MaxPrep’s national high school rankings. And what Coleman did was up his usage, moving to the top of the scouting report, while keeping his efficiency intact,” Shaw said of Coleman’s senior season.

As a result, Coleman fits perfectly into Illinois’ scheme of things, helping solidify a strong recruiting class for the 2026 season. They have already roped in talented players like Lucas Morillo, Ethan Brown, and Landon Davis for the upcoming season. With the addition of these players, there’s no doubt the quality of Brad Underwood’s team will improve significantly.
But for now, the Fighting Illini have plenty of business left in this season at the March Madness, and their immediate opponents happen to be the No.2 seed UConn.
Why Does Quentin Coleman’s Commitment Stand Despite Brad Underwood’s Generational March Madness Success?
Under Brad Underwood, Illinois is having a season that the program hasn’t had for a long time. One of the major contributors to this success is the star-studded depth of their roster, which has given them an edge on most occasions, making them one of the fiercest offensive teams in the country. Players like Keaton Wagler and Andrej Stojakovic have been key. But even then, Quentin Coleman and the other recruit signings bring a different kind of impact.
The impact of these new signings is significant because of the upcoming seniors’ departures and the transfer portal. For starters, three of their seniors: Kylan Boswell, Ben Humrichous, and AJ Redd will be calling it a day from Fighting Illini. None of them are starters for the team, but they added bench strength. While these are confirmed departures, a sharp axe also hangs over them in the transfer portal, as they’re not sure which players will return next season.
This is where this top recruiting class will come in handy for the program. But that’s a tale for another day, as their immediate concern will immediately shift to facing Dan Hurley and the UConn Huskies in the Final Four on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Fighting Illini are coming off a dominant win over Iowa and are immensely pushing for that first Championship game appearance since 2005.
“We know we’ve got a great opportunity in UConn, a team that we saw earlier this year,” Underwood said about the game. “It’s an incredible opportunity, and looking forward to seeing all orange and blue in Lucas Oil on Saturday, and looking forward to playing a great UConn team that’s very tough and no quit in them. So, yeah, we’re excited to be here.”
Saturday’s game will be the second matchup against UConn for Brad Underwood’s team. Illinois faced a 74-61 defeat in the regular season. But with the improvements Underwood’s team has made over the season, Illinois is favored with over 58% to win the game. But it won’t come easy for Illinois, and they would have to defend with their hearts out against Huskies’ elite offensive players, including Silas Demery Jr. and Tarris Reed Jr.
