Lady Tigers’ sexagenarian coach Kim Mulkey is busy fighting The Washington Post while the collegiate teams are vying for a spot in Sweet 16. Kim has threatened to sue the reputed publication for her profile in progress. But ace analyst Shannon Sharpe clapped back at LSU’s head coach over her legal threat.

Kim Mulkey is the only person in NCAA women’s basketball history to win a national championship as a player, assistant coach, and head coach. She was also a standout collegiate player, the winner of a national championship, and an Olympic gold medallist from 1984. In addition to her impressive winnings, her audacious behavior during the NCAA Tournament has drawn attention yet again.

Mulkey made a four-minute-long statement about a rumored Washington Post article during her press conference on Saturday posted by ESPN on YouTube. She swore to fight back against the WP’s slander, her university, and her amazing group of young women. Further threatening, “I’ve heard the best defamation law firm in the country and I will sue The Washington Post if they publish a false story about me.”

Naming Kim, Shannon Sharpe told ESPN, “But Kim Mulkey, instead of saying, ‘You know what, sometimes when emotion is high, logic is low’. And that’s not what women’s college basketball is about.”

Some comments under the YT video even agreed with Sharpe’s opinion when he said, “I have no problem answering these questions if you think this is something that might harm either one of these University or myself.”

It all began on Friday when Sports Illustrated writer Pat Forde posted on X, stating that he had learned of a “big Washington Post story in the works.” Mulkey later disclosed that LSU received “more than a dozen questions” from journalist Kent Babb, whom she did not name. Babb gave LSU until Thursday to reply, “right before” the team’s opening tournament game for the women’s basketball which Mulkey thought was intentional.

Aftermath of legal threat

Although the Washington Post wouldn’t comment on the controversy, Babb confirmed working on a profile about Mulkey. The publication did release an insightful article with an exaggerated narrative on March 23, 2024. The piece, “LSU coach Kim Mulkey lashes out at Washington Post, threatens legal action,” was written by Brett Martel and featured a distressed feature image of the LSU head coach.

Babb fueled the drama further after Mulkey’s press appearance on Saturday by writing “Hit piece?” in a post on X and linking to his published piece of Kelly. LSU football coach Brian Kelly was the subject of a 2022 piece by The Washington Post reporter Kent Babb which Mulkey didn’t like and further didn’t associate with the Post for any publish. “This is exactly why people don’t trust journalists and the media anymore. It’s these kinds of sleazy tactics and hatchet jobs that people are just tired of,” said the fierce Kim Mulky taking a stand for herself.
