Kim Mulkey’s LSU Tigers are starting to look a lot like the championship squad from 2022–23, and that’s exactly the vibe around Baton Rouge. And why wouldn’t it be? Five games into the new season, the Lady Tigers haven’t just won… they’ve breezed through every opponent in their path. Their latest statement came in a 101–77 rout of Tulane, another night where the offense looked unstoppable.

The Tigers have now scored 100-plus points in all five games, tying the SEC record for consecutive 100-point performances, a mark they originally set during their national title run. It might be all smiles for the women’s basketball team right now, but Kim Mulkey had some painful news for LSU football fans. Speaking after the game, the LSU head coach revealed that the Tigers might not be getting Lane Kiffin after all.
“Let me see who made the drive over to New Orleans,” Mulkey opened the press conference with a bit of humor. “Let’s see, who’s here from Baton Rouge? Three? Y’all will always have my love and I will give you first interviews. Four of you. I see who’s here. I know y’all back home trying to figure out if we gonna hire Lane Kiffin. ‘Oh, got to get the first news’. Hate to tell you, Lane was at Gainesville yesterday.”

For those who may not know, Lane Kiffin is the headline name in college football right now and arguably the top choice for any program searching for its next head coach. In just six seasons at Ole Miss, he’s taken the Rebels from an underachieving program to a real contender. And along the way, he’s reshaped his own reputation, going from being the “bad boy” to one of the most respected offensive minds in the game.
This year, Lane Kiffin helped No. 6 Ole Miss clinch a spot in the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history, even if they were to lose to Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl on Nov. 28. But there’s a real chance he might not be part of the Rebels much longer. According to a report from On3, Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter has asked Kiffin to make a decision about his future before the Egg Bowl.
This came after reports surfaced that Lane Kiffin and some of his family members had visited Baton Rouge, giving LSU fans hope. But as Kim Mulkey revealed, it’s now been confirmed that Kiffin’s family also visited Gainesville, Florida, for an official tour, and that could very well be his next destination.

While the search for Brian Kelly’s successor continues, one thing everyone agrees on is that Kim Mulkey’s job is secured. And one of her players recently spoke up about her wild, fiery personality, the same one that often gets misunderstood by the media.

MiLaysia Fulwiley on Kim Mulkey’s personality
Mulkey is easily one of the most fascinating and unpredictable personalities in women’s basketball. The kind of coach whose fiery style and larger-than-life presence often steal the spotlight. Because she’s so unapologetically herself, people on the outside tend to form quick judgments. But new transfer student from South Carolina, MiLaysia Fulwiley, said otherwise.

“What kind of surprised me to start off, [Mulkey] is not as crazy as it seems. Like, on TV, it’s not as crazy as it seems,” Fulwiley said of her head coach.

“One thing I kind of like the most about her is definitely how she gives you that second boost of confidence. And motivates all of her players. Even if you’re not playing, she motivates everybody to just be the best version of themselves. And she doesn’t really try to change you in any certain way. She just tried to make you better, and I think that kind of helps not only me, but the whole team.”
Fulwiley is off to the best start of her career, averaging 17.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists, and it’s clear she’s thriving in Baton Rouge. A big reason for that is Kim Mulkey. The LSU coach has unlocked a level in her game that she hadn’t quite reached before, and that is quite visible, judging by how confident, free, and explosive Fulwiley looks right now.
