A game-winning shot in March Madness should be a moment of pure celebration, but for Texas coach Sean Miller, it became a flashpoint of sideline fury.

A 68-66 tightrope result was quickly overshadowed by a Sean Miller moment and the subsequent controversy that occurred even before the final buzzer, prompting fans to share their opinions.

The situation unfolded on the sidelines in the dying minutes of the game. In a back-and-forth contest, the Longhorns finally seemed to put the dagger in the Wolfpack’s heart, courtesy of Tramon Mark’s fadeaway jumper, taking the score to 68-66 with just a second left. The moment was definitely an occasion for elation, but for the Texas assistant coach, Ryan Anderson, it seemed bigger, as he ran onto the court to celebrate with his players.

Miller lost his cool at the sight of it and charged at Anderson in immense frustration, before Kenya Hunter held him off. Sports Illustrated’s Texas basketball beat writer shared a glimpse of this sequence of action via an X post.

Even for a man like Sean Miller, who isn’t known for his calm demeanor, the frustration was understandable. It wasn’t the action that drew Miller’s reaction, but it was the timing of it.  When Anderson was looking to enter the court, there was a second left to play, meaning the game was still live, before NC State immediately called a timeout.

But it was a matter of a fraction of a second, and in any other case, the referees could have easily shown a technical foul to Anderson, meaning what? Two technical fouls for NC State and a golden opportunity for them to turn the game in their favor. Fortunately for the Longhorns, the referees did not issue any technical fouls.

This referee’s decision led Texas to advance to the first round of the West Region of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. But the controversy around the call also left Miller and co in an uncomfortable position among fans.

Fans Share Mixed Opinions on the Sequence of Play Leading to Sean Miller’s Rant on Assistant

“This is such an idiotic take. Rules violations should 10,000% take precedence over “a great ending”. When an action occurs that constitutes a tech being called, the tech should literally be called every single time. This shit isn’t Hollywood, lmfao,” a fan wrote.

“So we credit the officials for ignoring an important rule because it happened to occur at the end of the game. Interesting take,” commented another.

Many fans believed the officials should have given the technical to assistant Ryan Anderson. The rules do say that if coaches enter the court during live play, even for celebrations, it warrants a technical. It is also possible that the officials could have left Anderson with a warning. The Longhorns wouldn’t have faced a last-second threat from NC State.

Along the same lines, such an incident where the game was decided through a technical foul, courtesy of a player or referee storming the court, hasn’t taken place in recent times, either.

“Sean Miller is a turd, just ask Xavier Arizona, and Xavier for the 2nd time,” opined a fan.

“NC State immediately called a timeout, so the coach being on the floor wasn’t on the ref’s radar at all. Sean can be upset, but seriously RELAX. Still a second left, and you need to focus on getting your team ready for that last possession. Talk to your asst after the game,” chimed in another.

On the contrary, several fans thought Miller’s reactions were a bit exaggerated and that he should’ve stuck to briefing his team during NC State’s immediate timeout.

Miller’s personality on the sidelines is anything but calm and poised. Across his coaching career, Miller has been at the epicenter of unceremonious moments. Be it his locker-room feud with Kaleb Tarczewski during his Arizona stint in 2016 or his Big East referee callouts during his years at Xavier, Miller doesn’t shy away from expressing his opinions.

“Valid reaction from Miller, that assistant is an idiot,” summed up another.

Of course, Ryan Anderson played a major role in how the situation unfolded. There’s nothing wrong with the passion he carries for his team’s success, but the perfect time for the celebrations would have been right after the buzzer blared.

With this controversial and much-debated win, the Texas Longhorns will now face the BYU Cougars in the first round. The tip-off is on March 19 at the Moda Center. The Longhorns have just a 37% chance of winning the game. And rightly so, the Cougars, led by Aj Dybantsa, are on a scoring spree and will be a tough matchup to overcome for Sean Miller’s team.
