The duo wasted no time proving his point. Under the bright lights of a packed Jersey Mike’s Arena, Harper and Bailey delivered a performance that will go down in Rutgers’ basketball history. They led the Scarlet Knights to a commanding 91-64 victory over Columbia, leaving fans with a night to remember. Their contributions were as impressive as expected, but the way they rose to the occasion made it truly special.

Picture this: The electrifying freshman guard from Don Bosco Prep soared for a defensive rebound late in the game, the crowd of 8,000 already on their feet. The energy in the arena crackled as Dylan Harper, with poise beyond his years, fired a flawless pass to fellow freshman Ace Bailey. The latter finished with a smooth layup, and the arena erupted into pure pandemonium.

Well, it wasn’t just a highlight play. It was the defining moment of Harper’s triple-double performance, the first for Rutgers in 42 years. Thanks to his jaw-dropping stat line—16 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists on an efficient 6-of-10 shooting.

If it seems normal to you, then consider this: the last time a Scarlet Knight accomplished this feat was in 1983. Ronald Reagan was in office, and Roy Hinson dominated the court. Rightly said, history repeats itself! But more importantly, it was a legendary moment for the young guard—a point Coach Pikiell noted.

“Roy Hinson, not only a great player here and in the NBA, but a great guy, too,” Steve Pikiell said. “To be mentioned with him, for Dylan, that’s a special thing. I love the fact that he had seven rebounds in the first half. We need him to do those things. And he passed the heck out of the ball.”

As you saw above, deafening chants of Harper’s name, a standing ovation, and a surge of pride from the fans greeted Harper’s incredible feat. Just as it should!

Bailey, Harper’s partner-in-crime, wasn’t far behind. The five-star recruit poured in a game-high 24 points, shooting 11-of-18 from the field while grabbing eight boards. Together, the dynamic duo combined for 40 points, 19 rebounds, and 13 assists, leaving no doubt that they are the future of Rutgers basketball.

Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey: Rutgers’ future stars, says coach Nate Oats

Since his hiring in 2019, Oats has coached three freshmen who eventually became first-round NBA draft picks. And Oats believes the case is the same for Harper and Bailey. After the November 28 game against No. 9 Alabama, the projected top-five picks Harper and Bailey combined to score 59 points for Rutgers.

This simply means the rest of the roster contributed only 36 points in the 95-90 loss in the Players Era Wednesday.

“We’ve had a couple ourselves,” the Alabama coach said, confirming the two are first-round picks, “and these guys are up there.Harper, a 6-foot-6 guard during this matchup, hit a career-high 37 points. This helped him become the first Big Ten freshman in the past 20 seasons to score 94 points in three games and the first Division I freshman in that span to record back-to-back efforts of 35-plus points.

“[Harper], I mean, he pretty much gets to the rim whenever he wants,” Oats said. “We didn’t have anybody that could stay in front of him on ball screens.” No doubt, Bailey is no less. The talented freshman complemented his teammate with high-arching jump shots that seemed unstoppable. Bailey left his mark with a first-half fast-break dunk, pounding his chest and flexing as he racked up an impressive 22 points.

“He’s the best midrange shot-maker I’ve seen,” Oats said about Bailey.

As the final buzzer sounded, it wasn’t just a win or a historic stat line being celebrated—it was the birth of a new era. Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey aren’t just playing basketball; they’re building a legacy.

And for Rutgers fans, the wait for greatness has been well worth it. Next up, Rutgers heads to Bloomington to face Indiana, a team they’ve historically outworked despite the Hoosiers’ talent. With Harper and Bailey leading the charge, fans have every reason to believe in this squad.
