Another day, another Caitlin Clark record. It seems like any time the Iowa Hawkeyes superstar steps foot on the court, she creates more history. Just this season alone, she has broken the all-time scoring, three points made, and numerous other records. And she continued that trend against Dawn Staley’s undefeated South Carolina Gamecocks in the NCAA Championship game. Who could have thought she would save arguably her best single-quarter performance of her career for her final game as an Iowa star?
The stars shine the brightest on the biggest stage and so many fans thought Iowa’s point guard Caitlin Clark was probably planning to make a legendary exit from the national championship. Rightfully so, Clark scored 18 points in the first quarter of the game, the most ever scored in any quarter of the Championship Game. EIGHTEEN! Fans were understandably blown away by the start of the game and after Clark made a stunning three from 30 feet, one user wrote, “Caitlin Clark shot that b***h from the future lmfaoooooo.”

While Clark dominated the first quarter, it was all South Carolina after that. Dawn Staley’s defensive strategy allowed Clark to only add 12 points to her tally for the rest of the game as she ended with 30 points. A perfect 2023–24 season was capped off with South Carolina’s 87–75 victory over Iowa this afternoon, which marks their third national championship under Dawn Staley.
For Staley and her team, this is especially meaningful because a year ago, Iowa upset top-seeded South Carolina in the semifinals, resulting in their lone loss of the season. Unfortunately, Caitlin Clark’s remarkable collegiate career comes to an end with the loss in the National Championship game.
What’s next for the Iowa star?

As South Carolina finished their flawless season, the two-time national player of the year and Iowa standout suffered yet another heartbreak in the national championship game to end her career with the Hawkeyes. In her final Hawkeyes game, Clark scored 30 points on 10 of 28 shots. Though she is only 22 years old, Clark was a brilliant NCAA talent who broke many scoring records while enthralling global audiences.
She will go down in sports history as one of the most transcendent talents, known for bringing women’s collegiate basketball into the limelight this season. The women’s college basketball scene will be completely transformed when November 2024 arrives and the season begins, as Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese turn pros this year.
