Rebuilding is a part of growth. But isn’t it also about losing your former self? Caught up between losing their star power and preparing for the future are the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes suffered two setbacks when their star Caitlin Clark was drafted in the WNBA and subsequently, their head coach Lisa Bluder retired. On Thursday, an Iowa star came forward to share her take on what the Clark-devoid era looked like for the team and how they were recovering from the major losses.

Kylie Feuerbach has taken the change in good stride

The 23-year-old acknowledged that there has been an adjustment for the Hawkeyes after Clark left. However, she also opined that the team was taking good strides and recovering from the losses. “It’s definitely an adjustment. It’s been a good adjustment though. I think we’ve all been ready to go and we have a lot of newcomers. So it’s a lot of kind of learning, implementing new things but it’s been great. And everyone has been kind of ready to go since that end of last season,” Feuerbach stated, via Iowa’s News Now.

Notably, Clark left for the WNBA after taking the team to two back-to-back NCAA Championship Finales. Their star Gabbie Marshall too completed her final year with the Hawkeyes and graduated. Plus, Bluder who had been their head coach for a good 24 years announced her retirement in May this year. Another formidable athlete Kate Martin was drafted in the WNBA by the Las Vegas Aces this year. Therefore, the Hawkeyes have lost all their major players. But as they say, this is just the beginning of rebuilding.

The Hawkeyes have new freshmen in Taylor Stremlow, Ava Heiden, Aaliyah Guyton, Callie Levin, and Teagan Mallegni. Hopefully, under their new head coach, Jan Jensen the Iowa-based team will be able to recover and form a team as distinguished as they had done when Clark was in college. And fans would be hoping that they even win their first championship title under Jansen. Meanwhile, Feuerbach was also asked to give her take on Jansen.

Kylie Feuerbach shares her take on Jan Jensen

Iowa’s previous head coach Lisa Bluder retired in May this year and the search for the next coach began, which ended when Iowa promoted Jan Jensen. Jensen had been the associate coach at Iowa for 24 years when Bluder was the head coach. Hence, she knows the ins and outs of the team and is well accustomed to both the playing and the people management styles.

Feuerbach noted how Jensen was continuing the Hawkeyes’ traditions and how it doesn’t feel very different from how it was under Bluder. “She’s been…I mean amazing and it doesn’t feel very different compared to how it was from the past previous years, which is great for the people that have been here,” Feuerbach concluded.

Hopefully, Jensen will also be able to take the Hawkeyes to the NCAA finals this year and help them grab their first championship title. Perhaps, the newcomers will be able to fill in Clark’s shoes which is difficult but not impossible.
