Jon Scheyer had an impressive career as a player who set records and played in the NBA summer league. But in turn of events, he decided to take a career as a coach. In 2013, he started his coaching career as a special assistant for Coach K. A decade later, as Scheyer has stepped into the legend’s shoes, he’s drawing parallels between his and Coach K’s scheduling strategy.
Mike Krzyzewski aka Coach K is known for his exceptional coaching skills. In a way, it could be said that if a team has Coach K as their coach, they have already won. And his impressive career record as a coach only backs this statement. After he retired in 2022, Scheyer took over his place as the head coach of the Duke basketball team. “Coach K has always scheduled aggressively and you know if you go back to the 80s, 90s, early 2000s, would always play tough road games, non-conference, but also schedules have continued to evolve,” Coach Scheyer said. “We’re playing 20 conference games, which made it harder to play some of these non-conference games that contest you against different opponents early. But for us, we want to schedule aggressively, we want to schedule differently, you have to do it far in advance now.”
Although the times are definitely different now from the 2000s, it’s still important for a team to face exposure outside their conference as this can prove to be a very crucial moment for players to improve as a team and as well as an individual. Notably, the Duke Blue Devils are more than ready to face the upcoming NCAA season head-on.
