A few days ago, Azzi Fudd was optimistic about her return to the court. “Some days I do more, some days I do a little bit less, but I’m doing most stuff like it’s not, it’s, we’re almost there. I’m excited.” She is looking forward to playing, after all, it has been her third injury in as many years with the Huskies. And before the season opener, Coach Geno Auriemma gave an update on a number of players, including the No. 35.

As per Emily Adams, “Injury report from Geno Auriemma: KK Arnold “seems to be fine” and will play tomorrow, Morgan Cheli “in and out of practice,” probably won’t. Ayanna Patterson out of her sling but still recovering. Azzi Fudd will be active sooner than later, likely before everyone but Cheli.

Previously, Coach had stated that Fudd was close to returning to full practice. And as per the recent update, it seems there are no setbacks during the rehab program. The former No. 1 recruit from the class of 2021 featured in just 25 games during her freshman season because of a foot injury. As a sophomore, knee injuries sidelined her on two occasions, once again limiting her to playing just 15 games in all. The ACL and meniscal tear was a blow after just two games, last season. That’s why Coach Auriemma was happy that Fudd was returning during the important phase.

Azzi I’m thinking, certainly she won’t be ready the first week of November, even the second week of November. But before we get into the biggest, most important part of our schedule. Keeping my fingers crossed.” Auriemma spoke to the press in early October. It was in line with how the 21-year-old was feeling. As she stated, “little to no,” aches or pain in her knee in September.

However, after years of injury woes, seems like the Hall of Famer coach has finally created a roster that just might perform despite the veteran star Bueckers’ absence on the floor.

Despite Azzi Fudd’s late arrival, Coach seems ready

After an intense 71-69 loss to the Hawkeyes, UConn made four additions to the roster. Last year’s Final Four runs were unexpected because of multiple injuries. So with the addition of freshmen Sarah Strong, Morgan Cheli, and Allie Ziebell plus the transfer from Princeton, Kaitlyn Chen, Coach Auriemma is gunning for his 12th title.

“We have some pieces that are still on their way back, but what we do have is nine players who can all contribute when they step on the floor and now it’s just a matter of finding the pieces.” He also addressed the main issue of the team’s performance without the star player Paige Bueckers. “We gotta find a way to be really good when [Bueckers] is not on the floor.”

He particularly emphasized two names: KK Arnold and Kaitlyn Chen. As per the coach, they could be assets to the team when Bueckers or Azzi Fudd are not playing. And the exhibition game against Fort Hays State, in less than 24 hours, is the perfect way to find just how will the coach line up his team.
