Feast Week is here, and this past Monday marked the start of several exciting in-season tournaments, including the Baha Mar Women’s Championship tournament. Among the participating teams, UConn, ranked No. 2, took on Oregon State in the first round. Unsurprisingly, the Huskies, led by All-American Paige Bueckers, secured an easy win, improving to a 5-0 record. While it was the desired finish for the team, wasn’t so much for Ashlynn Shade.

By the end of the third quarter, she had tallied six points, shooting 2-for-4 from beyond the arc and 2-for-5 from the field. Her performance drew attention, but just as the momentum seemed to be building, Shade was unexpectedly sidelined, with Azzi Fudd stepping in to replace her. Naturally, injury was a speculated concern.

According to a recent tweet by Maggie Vanoni on X (formerly Twitter), Shade sustained an injury to her stomach or hip area during gameplay, prompting the substitution. Vanoni’s comment read: “Ashlynn Shade appears to have taken a hit to the stomach/hip area. She checks out for Azzi.” While no official update has been provided by UConn, the injury appears to be minor.

Despite the hopeful outlook, uncertainty remains. As UConn moves on to the second round to face No. 18 Ole Miss, Ashlynn Shade’s presence on the court could be a game-changer—especially considering UConn’s struggles with injuries last year, which left the team searching for healthy players to step up.

That was when Ashlynn Shade emerged as a vital contributor

There’s no replacing the role Shade has carved out for herself on this roster. Despite being a DNP (Did Not Play) due to a coach’s decision in Game 2 against NC State and starting the season on the bench, Shade went on to start the final 32 games of the year. She ranked third on the team in both scoring and minutes played, showcasing her consistency and value.

As the Big East Freshman of the Year, Shade was instrumental in helping UConn return to the NCAA Final Four after a one-year absence. It was no small feat for a roster that took time to rebuild into a full 14-player squad. Ahead of this season, UConn head coach Geno Auriemma expressed his expectations for Shade after her performance in the team’s lone exhibition game: “The thing that I would like for her is to be consistently more adventurous out there, try new things.”

So far, she has delivered. In UConn’s recent game against Oregon State, Shade went 3-for-6 on field goals and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. The question now is whether Shade can recover in time to return to the court and continue her impressive run.
